Help us #RaisetheBarn on #GivingTuesday!
Save the date. Giving Tuesday is November 28, 2017.
We have exciting news at Costanoa Commons Farm! Next spring, we begin ramping up to full production, growing and selling healthy food, herbs, flowers, and eggs. We wouldn’t have gotten this far without you, our generous friends and supporters! Thank you for coming to our work days, for just dropping by to offer your time, and for donating tools and machinery and much needed funds!

And there’s more. We’re raising funds to raise a barn. It’s an ambitious project, and we need to raise $100,000. (Wow!) We are excited and determined, and we hope that you will continue to support us as we build and develop our dream—a place for people with and without disabilities to contribute and be part of a community.

Why do we need a barn? We need it for:

  • Produce washing and packing
  • Cooler storage for produce and flowers until they reach their market
  • Tractor implement, seed, tool, and equipment storage
  • Work space for value added production (herbal products, wreaths)
  • Farm stand product storage
  • Year-round covered space for farm staff and volunteers as they build relationships with one another and break bread together

Will you help us #RaisetheBarn?

#GivingTuesday is November 28th. It’s a day of generosity and support, when friends come together to give to important causes. We hope you will keep us in your thoughts as we approach the holidays and this giving season.

And you don’t need to wait until November 28th to help us out!

Volunteer spotlight: Michelle Perry

This month we acknowledge and thank volunteer Michelle Perry who, among other tasks, manages our work day kitchen.

Originally from Victoria, Canada, Michelle moved with her family to California in 2003 and has always volunteered. Friends and family know she loves to welcome everyone with home cooked meals, so we were thrilled when she offered help to feed over 100 hungry volunteers on work days. Her energy, drive, and organizational skills are matched only by her warmth and thoughtfulness as she plans the menu, shops, chops, and manages the kitchen on our busy work day.

When asked about work day, Michelle said: “My favorite part of work day is always the people—reconnecting and catching up and pooling our energy and resources for such a great cause. But I also love driving thru those gates in the early morning hours when the sun is just rising and the farm is quiet. Summer, the dog, greets me and I hear the chickens in the distance. I get to see all the changes happening! So much growth from week to week and month to month as the farm blossoms in every corner into a vibrant and literally beautiful community.”

Concrete help from good friends
The Holt family visits the farm.
Workers at Central Concrete prepare their donations.
When Terry Holt, Director of Project Management at Central Concrete, visited Costanoa Commons Farm last fall with his family, he began thinking about how he could help us reach some of our goals. His infant son, James, was born with health challenges and Costanoa Commons’ vision of a farm where all abilities are welcome was something he could relate to. Back at the office, Terry inquired about his employer’s charitable giving program and the result has been a generous donation of $1500 to our farm!

Not stopping there, the team at Central Concrete also pulled together materials to help with ongoing farm work. A few weeks ago, Terry came by with his family, Karen and James, to present Costanoa Commons with a new wheelbarrow, much needed steel stakes and string line, ear protection for our volunteers, and a nice hard hat for worker safety.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and all of us here at Costanoa Commons Farm, a warm thank you to our new friends at Central Concrete for supporting our work, and to Terry and Karen who, along with future farmer, James, are helping us grow for life!
