Our 10 Most Interesting Articles of the Month

We’ve trawled the innards of the internet to bring you a curated look at the world of impact investment, innovation, social businesses, critical thought and reflection, with a smattering of events and news.

1) The 2017 Impact Investment Summit in Sydney is 3 weeks away...it's the peak gathering of Asia Pacific’s impact investment community, convening active investors and those exploring the development of an impact investment strategy.  Treasurer, Scott Morrison, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Julie Bishop, will both address the summit, in addition to the twenty international speakers and forty local panelists featuring in the stellar line-up.
2) SEWF 2017: what the delegates thought..There were 1,600 people from all around the world at the Social Enterprise World Forum in Christchurch last week, making it the biggest world forum to date. Rata Ingram had a chat with some of them to find out what was inspiring them and what lessons they were going to take home.
3) Insights from the Social Capital Markets (SOCAP) 17 Conference.. It only launched last year, but the The Rise Fund was all over the agenda at last week’s SOCAP17, which draws investors and entrepreneurs to San Francisco each year to discuss issues at the intersection of money and meaning.

4) Why Impact Investing Funds Need To Invest In Creativity

5) Impact investors raising capital for food and agriculture projects that they believe have the potential to fix a broken food system.  A growing number of investment companies in this realm are using capital to help ranchers switch to 100 percent grass-fed beef production, connect small farms to communities with little access to fresh food and transition farmland used to grow commodity corn and soy to organic, regenerative systems.
6) Swell Investing is a new impact investing platform incorporating the latest fintech tools for investing, commonly known as robo-advisors paired with impact data to make informed decisions about impact. The idea came from thinking about how consumers were increasingly making buying decisions based on social impact and that there ought to be a way for investors to do the same.
7) Financial Times: Impact Investments in Israel and the Palestinian territories.. A project to produce tablets for schoolchildren and their parents, a company that reduces the need for pesticides, an IT development centre in a crisis-ridden location and a bond to fight type 2 diabetes. What do these disparate schemes have in common? They are all cited by investors and entrepreneurs as examples of impact investments in Israel and the Palestinian territories.  One way or another, people are increasingly aware of the impact that investments can have in the ongoing conflict.
8) Stanford Social Innovation Review: Talking About Ethics in Impact Investing.  To make the best and most consistent decisions, impact investors need to think about values as much as they think about growth and financial returns.
9) TPG recently raised $2 billion for The Rise Fund, the biggest impact-investing fund to date. It is run by TPG's Bill McGlashan and some big profile board members such as the musician/philanthropist Bono, Richard Branson, Reid Hoffman and TPG's Coulter and David Bonderman. The fund's goal is to invest in health care, education and clean energy projects.
10) Salesforce Just Launched A $50 Million Impact Investing Fund  It will focus on investing on companies doing innovative impact work using Salesforce’s software in the fields of workplace development, equality, sustainability, and the social sector.
