Greetings,

This month’s Flute Examiner is full of tricks and treats, just in time for Halloween! Almost every one of us has experienced, at one time or another, the twinges, aches and outright pain that can happen when we are not mindful of our bodies and the ways in which we use and abuse them in the pursuit of our goals.

This month we begin a regular column with Kelly Wilson, a flutist and Body Mapping specialist. Read with us each month as she helps us to understand our bodies as they relate to our music. Likewise, I think that each one of us understands how easy it is for our schedules and obligations to get out of control, and that is especially true in our undergraduate years, as we learn for the first time how to control our own calendars. Katherine Lewis’ article “My Survival Story” is full of tips and ideas for ways to take care of your mind and body.

Along with those tricks, we also have treats! Travel with Ai Goldsmith to Harry Gosse’s flute-making shop in Germany in this month’s Flute2Go, and explore modern mechanisms with Keith Hanlon in this month’s 9mm piccolo column.

My own personal treat this month was the chance to interview world-class flutist and marvelous human being Rhonda Larson, learning more about her philosophy of music and her life. We hope you’ll enjoy this month’s offerings!
