Love your work. Love your life.
Dear Friends,

These days, wedding invitations come less frequently. But this past Saturday, I got to witness true love up close when Nina and Harvey Karp’s sparkling daughter Lexi married Peter in Malibu. Spending even a few hours participating in another life stage returns you to your own world with new perspective.

Dream big, plan big!

Social Media Musts

Get a professional headshot. Look on Craigslist for a local pro or get a friend with a good camera to take your photo. Put on a little makeup, do your hair, and dress professionally for it. You will use this headshot across all social media platforms.

Fill out your bios and add a personal touch. Look at some women you admire as examples. Hillary Clinton adds a splash of personality to her Twitter bio with “Pantsuit aficionado.” Rachel Sklar, founder of professional women’s network TheLi.st adds color to hers by referring to herself as “Media addict on the loose.”

Learn the lingo. Each platform has its own culture. It doesn’t take long to learn, but figure it out by following social media veterans and watching how they do it.

Stay on brand. We don’t want to hear an award-winning poet tweeting about reality TV or a finance executive going on about her favorite handbags. Pick one or two topics and focus on those.

Stay positive. It’s tempting to use social media to complain about your least favorite airline, the colleague who munches too loudly, or the friend who snubbed you, but save that talk for your nearest and dearest. Keep it uplifting.
Dear Sam,

How do I get my mom on board with my busy working mom lifestyle? She was a stay at home mom when I was growing up and she disapproves of how much I travel. She makes comments in front of my kids and my husband.

Dear Kate,

It is one thing for your mom to express her disapproval privately, and a whole other to do it in front of your family. She is inevitably impacting your family’s reaction to your work. Explain that to be a part of your life also requires being supportive, and be firm about your expectation that she stop criticizing you in front of your kids.

Is your mom serving as your primary source of childcare? If so, then she automatically has earned a significant voice in your family. In that case, you need to make sure she understands how her negativity is impacting you. We need the village to boost us, not to push us down.

Love,
Sam
