77.1 million people receive their news from MDIF clients
Last year, MDIF clients provided news and information to 77.1 million people in countries where access to free and independent media is under threat. At a time when fake news and propaganda are thriving, and economic and political pressure on media organizations is mounting, MDIF clients provided fact-based news and informed opinion to people in nearly 30 countries, while generating a combined $338 million in sales.

The Impact Dashboard 2017 also found that companies working with MDIF grow reach and revenues. After five years of working with us, client reach grew by a median of 32% and sales increased by a median of 109%.

From local news websites to national broadcasters, our clients had a profound impact on their societies, by reporting on corruption and government accountability, encouraging democratic participation during elections and covering issues that impact on people’s lives but are often under-reported, like the environment, gender and LGBT.

The Media Development Impact Dashboard 2017, our annual impact analysis, presents concrete examples of how our clients have created real change in their communities through their reporting in 2016, including: exposing corruption in Serbia; holding the government to account in Indonesia; covering minority ethnic rights in India; reporting on the environment in Guatemala; covering gender in South Africa; and reporting on LGBT in Zimbabwe.
