Stony Brook’s Heilbron Talks Hiring Staff With NIU’s Frazier & App State’s Gillin
Williams to Virginia: Cavaliers Prez-elect Ryan's take, "I think Carla is spectacular. She is exceedingly well-prepared for this role, but more than that, she is fiercely committed to excellence in both athletics and academics and has a track record of success in both arenas." Georgia Prez Morehead: "I have had the pleasure of working for many years with Carla Williams as president, provost and faculty athletics representative. She is an outstanding athletic administrator and importantly a wonderful role model for our student-athletes. I know she will be a superb athletic director for the University of Virginia." (link); Williams: "There are so many reasons why it's attractive. There are great coaches here who are great people who really support the mission of education through sports participation, and that's all very important to me. [...] I never sat around and mapped out how I was going to be an athletic director, but I know subconsciously I wanted to be prepared for the opportunity. I paid attention to everybody, but especially people in leadership positions. I always wanted to be as good a leader as I could be, so I always paid attention to people in leadership positions, whether that was a head coach or senior associate athletic director or athletic director or president or provost. I've always been very observant and always willing to learn." Former Georgia & current Miami (FL) FB HC Richt calls the hire of Williams a "home run." (link); More via an intro video put together by UVA. Full presser today at 2:30p. (link); USA Today's Wolken: "Nice run of schools lately hiring women for AD jobs and there are several No. 2s in line to move up." (link)
The student newspaper at Maryland gets feedback from a handful of Terps HCs on the six-month sabbatical for AD Anderson & the leadership of Interim boss Evans. Volleyball's Aird: "I think Kevin's a really good guy. I think he did a great job. I think Damon's more than capable. Whoever is in that position I think is going to look out for us and give us everything we need to be successful." Men's LAX HC Tillman: "I've been through it, fortunately. Kevin Anderson came in and it was kind of a seamless transition. I foresee the same thing [here]. Damon has done a tremendous job over the past couple of years. He's got a lot of experience, so we're looking forward to working with him and are thankful for his support." Field Hockey's Meharg says "every AD is different," as well as, "We just wish the best for Kevin." (link)
In a Q&A, still relatively new Eastern Michigan AD Wetherbee talks about his personal and professional background, what attracted him to EMU, his vision for the department, and his leadership style. Wetherbee: "One of the biggest challenges is ourselves, and not just in athletics. We need to truly believe this place can be special and successful. I want our entire department, entire student body, and the entire university to be excited about Eastern. Obviously, resources are always one of the challenges. We need students, staff, fans, and donors to believe in and support us now more than ever. With some hard work and commitment, we can transform this athletic department and this university in the next few years." On leadership: "Everything I try to do starts from my heart. I truly care about all of my staff and all of our 500-plus student athletes, and I want to create a family atmosphere that allows us to trust each other and know that we have each other’s back. I try to hire really talented people and let them do their job." (link)

ESPN College GameDay is headed to Columbus for next weekend's premier matchup between Ohio State & Penn State. (link); Bloomberg's Bachman asks, "Why Do Airlines Still Make Passengers Check In for Flights?" While maligned as a yesteryear technology-backward practice, "It remains a decent proxy for how many people will miss a flight, helping carriers manage no-shows and fill those empty spots." From a revenue-generation standpoint, there's another reason airlines are slow to change, "By reducing the number of times you interact with a carrier, the airline is also cutting the number of times it can sell you a cabin upgrade, extra-legroom seats, additional frequent-flier miles, Wi-Fi access—all add-ons that are commonly offered on airline web sites and at airport kiosks." (link)

The “Showdown for Relief” MBB exhibition yesterday in Kansas City between the Kansas and Missouri raised over $1.75M for organizations dedicated to hurricane relief efforts. The game was also available online via pay-per-view for $40, which reportedly raised an additional $646K. (link); In their postgame press conferences, both KU HC Self and Mizzou HC Martin were asked about the possibility of renewing the rivalry. Self: "That’s what fans want to know, but we’re gonna do what’s best for us. We’re not interested in doing what’s best for Missouri or best for Missouri fans. But if it’s best for us to play ’em, we will. It’s not a complicated deal. I’m not gonna say never, but I don’t think there’s been any change in our position." Martin: "Of course you want to play the game. (Kansas) is a great program, Bill (Self has) done a tremendous job. He’s won the league, what, 13, 14 straight years? That’s impressive. Of course we’d love to play. But I think both sides have to agree upon something like that. You saw the energy behind it. We’ll see." (link)
Weekend Wrap: Georgia Southern AD Kleinlein makes a move as FB HC Summers is dismissed, owed in the neighborhood of $600K pending mediation. (link); USA Today's Wolken pens his weekly Misery Index. New Top 5: Florida State, Michigan, USC, BYU & Texas. Also considered: Illinois, Kansas State, Houston, Arkansas, North Carolina. (link); Yahoo's Forde thinks the likelihood of the Pac-12 getting a squad into the College FB Playoff is slim with USC's loss at Notre Dame. Wonders if there's a scenario where a two-loss Auburn team could backdoor its way in with wins over Alabama & Georgia (potentially twice). Iowa State controls it's own destiny in the Big 12. Think about that. More. (link)
Sports Illustrated's Deitsch rattles off some TV ratings of note from Saturday as part of his weekly media column. Michigan-Penn State (ABC) did a 4.2 overnight for the top mark, Oklahoma State-Texas (ABC) recorded a 2.9, Notre Dame-USC (NBC) inked a 2.14, Florida State-Louisville (ESPN) =  2.0, Indiana-Michigan State (ABC) = 2.3 & Kansas-TCU (FOX) = 0.9. More data tomorrow after the slew of press releases come out today. (link)
Three years after leaving independence for the AAC, Navy FB is thriving thanks to the AAC and non-conference agreements with Notre Dame, Air Force and Army. HC Niumatalolo explains why he wanted to join a conference, “I think initially, our administration was a little wary, back when we were approached by what was then the Big East. They were worried if we’d have to change our academic standards. I just felt like the landscape was changing, and I didn’t want to get left out.” In an effort to increase exposure for the program as the Midshipmen strive to be the 'Group of 5' NY6 rep, Niumatalolo invited cameras in this year as part of Showtime’s “A Season With” series, which previously featured Notre Dame and Florida State. Niumatalolo: "I just thought it was cool, as soon as I heard about it. We don’t have a budget ourselves for this kind of marketing. It’s great for our program, and we don’t have anything to hide, either. I told them to come on in." (link)
More ESPN: SC6 host Hill will return to the airwaves today, "Me and ESPN are fine. I know it’s great conjecture to think about [whether she would leave ESPN after the suspension], but, like, we’re fine. We’re in a good place and I’m happy to be back at the network. [...]  The only thing I’ll ever apologize for is, I put ESPN in a bad spot. I’ll never take back what I said. I put them in a bad spot, and that’s the truth of it. I regret the position I put them in. I regret, a lot of the people I work with, the position we put our show in. I’ll never take back what I said. So you can take that to mean what it means." (link); The coming MBB season brings this beautiful nugget, "From November 10th through March 4th, across the ESPN family of networks (including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, the SEC Network, and the Longhorn Network), there are only five days without a college basketball game." (link); On the WBB side, over 1,200 games will be broadcast across the Worldwide Leader's family of outlets, including a return of Big Monday & Thursday Primetime matchups. More. (link); Former UConn MBB standout Butler has joined ESPN in an on-air role. (link)
The title says it all from McKinsey, "We are wrong about millennial sports fans." Thesis: "We aren’t losing fans, we are fighting short attention spans. With so many sports options across so many screens, fans of all ages—not just millennials—are watching fewer games and quitting them faster." Keys: Millennials v. Gen X is the wrong way to segment, a wide majority of millennials still have cable, having kids in the house changes things, millennials still watch live games & "everyone's digital." Takeaways: Promote ticket sales on social media, target moms, "highlights are a gateway to subscription video." More. (link)

Lightfoot, Franklin and White gets profile treatment. The Birmingham-based law firm notes on its website that it "has established itself as a national leader in NCAA compliance and collegiate institutions... has handled several matters before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and Infractions Appeals Committee that received national attention." Auburn began using LF&W as far back as the early 2000s, when a two-year long investigation into the MBB program resulted in the Tigers getting "cleared of the most serious rule violations," and it was the firm of choice to defend the school during the amateurism debate surrounding former QB Newton. Because of that success, Texas A&M hired LF&W when its own former standout QB, Manziel, came under fire. The company website lists clients in all P5 leagues, the Mountain West, C-USA and AAC. More. Sticking on the legal tip, former Oregon State Wrestling AC Roberts has sued OSU contending he was "falsely accused of allowing or participating in derogatory remarks made by members of the wrestling team towards one of their teammates." The incident in question occurred in the spring, in July Roberts signed an employment agreement to remain on staff through June 2018 with compensation of $108K, then in August was fired "without cause" after what he says was a "cursory and inadequate" investigation by the university. Per the suit, the school denied the enforceability of the employment agreement saying the president nor a designee had signed it, but Roberts contends Beavers' AD Barnes executed the agreement for the university. The suit names OSU, Barnes and another employee, and seeks $18K in lost wages with $9K per month accrual. (link)
In response to a lawsuit earlier this month, filed by a woman accusing former Wildcats FB student-athlete Bradford of assault, claiming the University of Arizona failed to take action to protect other students when the school knew of Bradford's abusive past, UA attorneys have denied that the athletic department ever claimed to have a "zero-tolerance" policy toward domestic violence. FB HC Rodriguez, five days after Bradford's arrest and dismissal from the team, said "... If you did it, if you put your hands on a woman in any way, shape or form, you're done," but UA's response to the lawsuit doesn't specifically address Rodriguez's statement. (link)
Around Higher Ed: UCF Provost/EVP Whittaker withdraws from the Iowa State Prez search. The Cyclones still expect to name former Prez Leath's replacement today. (link); The new ISU prez is expected to make more than former Prez Leath, who in FY16 earned $650K. (link); Wisconsin may make changes to its M.B.A. program to "increase accessibility, flexibility" and be "responsive to the changing needs of students and employers," perhaps following in the footsteps of Virginia Tech, Iowa and Wake Forest by eliminating the full-time M.B.A. programs and instead offering shorter, more specialized ones. (link); Three men were arrested on charges of attempted murder after one of them allegedly fired at protesters of white nationalist Spencer after his speech at Florida last week. (link)
Also Noticed: Eight days later, the FBI says it "erred" in confirming the existence of documents involving Kansas and Adidas, saying its initial response to the Kansan's FOIA request was "not meant to be sent." (link); Oklahoma State MBB HC Boynton adds former Oral Roberts HC Scott Sutton as an AC. (link);  Game 7 of the Astros-Yankees series drew 9.924M viewers on FS1, the most-watched telecast in FS1 history. Again, exactly the reason the contest showed up on FS1. (link); Sports Beer Brewing Co. owner Parshall is due in court later this month to defend his attempted use of the names "Boilermakers Beer" or "Boilermakers Brewing Co." which Purdue contends is a name/image "likely to cause confusion.... and to deceive as to the affiliation, connection of association... with the university." (link); Former YouTube staffer Mehrotra has since founded Coda with former Google employee DeNeui. The company has announced a private beta today that "makes a collaborative document editor that combines a word processor and a spreadsheet." Lookout Excel. (link)
