KTH Live-in-Lab is an interdisciplinary R&D and educational platform, that is why on the Master thesis defence of Shreyans Maloo attracted students, researchers and professors from at least three different KTH schools: Electrical Engineering, Architecture and Building Ebvironment and Industrial Engineering and management.
Shreyans's project aimes to developing a voice-controlled home-assisting system for the KTH Live-in Lab. The system will be created around a Speech to text service and improving its performance through various modifications/integrations. The solution will be installed in the KTH Live-in Lab and integrated with the central controller once the sensors placement and controller installation is done.
Shreyans tested three different prototypes and in the end stayed on the IBM's solutions: Bluemix and Watson to make assistant responsive and able to learn commands.
To make the system more robust and accurate, a new variable called, “Failure Factors” were defined for a voice-controlled system. The prototypes were designed and improved with these factors as a basis. The main aim of the project is to make a system capable of handling a set of pre-defined simple commands. Future work will consist of making the system capable of handling complex user commands and having an active feedback mechanism such that the user can have conversation with the system.
For the future research Shreyans plans to train system to recognize and learn more advanced command and connect them with the sustainable home solutions.
