Celebrate the Nisenan Next Weekend

Friday: Art Reception Kick-off at Nevada City Winery

Don't miss the art reception kick off for Nisenan Heritage Day next Friday, November 10, from 6pm-10pm at the Nevada City Winery. Come and enjoy appetizers, wine, art, conversation, community, and music by Undercover.

The art event was conceived to open and engage in conversation about this land and its Native people, the Nisenan. Much of today's conversation about this region's past revolves around the Gold Rush and our community doesn't know about the ancient Native American society of people who lived here long before the coming of the pioneers and settlers.

Creating Community Conversation Through Art will bring together artists who will create art either discussing the Nisenan, the landscape or the animal/plant beings that also thrived here before 1849.

It's difficult to openly talk about the near genocide of the Nisenan. These conversations will be brought to light utilizing art as the conduit. This event will promote visibility of this important issue and expand conversations.

Saturday: Nisenan Heritage Day at Sierra College

Join SYRCL at Nisenan Heritage Day next Saturday, November 11, at Sierra College. This is an all day event from 11am to 4pm in which we will celebrate the culture and heritage of the Nisenan people who have inhabited this region for millennia. There will be basket demonstrations, academic presentations, native artists, a Nisenan language panel, art, native dancers, Indian tacos, and more!

Shelly Covert, Nevada City Rancheria Tribal Council Secretary and organizer of Nisenan Heritage Day is a long time SYRCL partner. SYRCL worked with the Nevada City Rancheria to create interpretive signage along the Yuba Goldfields Trail which depicts how the Yuba River was essential to the Nisenan way of life. In January, the Wild and Scenic Film Festival hosted a workshop lead by Shelly Covert which discussed how the proposed Centennial Dam perpetuates the assault on the living culture of the Nisenan. In March, SYRCL hosted the Centennial Dam Watchdog Activist Summit, in which Shelly represented the Nisenan peoples and spoke about what would lost on the Bear River if the dam were to be built. It is SYRCL's pleasure to work along side Shelly and the tribe to stop Centennial Dam. Please join SYRCL at Nisenan Heritage Day next Saturday to hear the latest on Centennial and how you can get involved!

Who is ready to see the Klamath Dams come down?

October 27, 2017, Article by California Trout.

It’s the final push to let the Klamath River flow freely once again. Four aging power dams are up for removal in 2020, the result of a collaborative agreement crafted by 42 stakeholder groups, including the dam owner PacifiCorp, which was finally signed last year. The fate of their removal now lies with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the federal agency responsible for hydropower projects. FERC has opened up the public comment submission period; the time to act is now to make our voices heard. Full article here.
