UPWARD for children and families

Gila River Community Council Supports UPWARD!

The Gila River Community Council recently awarded UPWARD $75,000 to provide outpatient therapy for children.  UPWARD provides occupational, speech, feeding, physical and music therapies to many low income children in the valley. Ms. Josefa Almanza, speech/language pathologist at UPWARD, stated “I will never forget the first time I placed my wheelchair bound client on the wheelchair swing on our adaptive playground. As a blind therapist, I sensed the priceless smile on his face and I will never forget his words ‘Josefa, I want to do speech therapy on the swing every week.’ From that day on, I value the power of words even more since he used a complete sentence to share his feelings.” We are grateful for the generous support of the Gila River Community Council!

Phoenix Suns Charities Supports UPWARD!

Phoenix Suns Charities presented UPWARD with a $7,500 check to provide nursing services for our children. They also donated two tickets to a Suns vs Milwaukee Bucks game in November. These will be raffled off to one lucky UPWARD staff member!

UPWARD Expands Board of Directors

UPWARD has two new board members! Missy Farrington and Bruce Heatwole joined the board in July! Missy is Director of Special Needs Ministry at Highlands Church in Scottsdale. Bruce is a retired public school administrator and is currently an adjunct professor at Glendale Community College. He was also very involved in Glendale city politics.

Brown & Brown "Cooks for Kids"

On October 13, 2017, a small team of volunteers from our Brown & Brown Insurance office came to be a part of the “Cook for Kids” program at Upward…  It was an amazing experience.   Our task was to provide and serve lunch to the kids of Upward.   We came, we saw, we served and we were blown away with the mission of Upward in our community.   It is easy to identify a need… but Upward excels in that they truly fulfill their mission of giving education, therapy and love to special kids.
There are a lot of charitable organizations in our city, but Upward stands alone in the quality of their staff, the purity of their support and their singular focus on helping a precious segment of our community.
I guarantee we will be back to Upward again and again.

Pawsitive Friendships

Tosha Tharp, CEO/Founder of Pawsitive Friendships says, "We are excited to be working with the therapists at Upward. We have seen amazing results with children increasing vocabulary, decreased anxiety, increased motor skills and self regulation when the animals are incorporated into Therapy. We can’t wait to see the results Upward clients will have with our teams.
Music, a mini horse, came and did therapy with one of our outpatient clients in October! It was a wonderful experience for both!

UPWARD Looks Forward

UPWARD’s Board of Directors, CEO and Director of Programs met for a Strategic Planning session on Saturday, September 30th. The session was led by Brian Critchfield, CEO of Cartography Digital. We are excited about a dynamic vision for the future.
