Master of Philosophy
Happy to report my thesis was very well received by two external examiners. My thesis topic was Drones and Night Vision: Militarised Technology in Paintings by George Gittoes and Jon Cattapan.
While I was studying I kept painting, working mainly with gouache on paper. I have a huge body of work that reflects upon my research into the technical, ethical, legal and social issues surrounding militarised airborne drones, ubiquitous surveillance and increasingly autonomous weapon systems. Since finishing the M. Phil I have returned to oil paints.

World of Drones Congress Art Prize
Please see PRESS RELEASE
The inaugural World of Drones Congress was held in Brisbane in August/September this year. Visitors and presenters came from all over the world to attend. The Congress focused on the humanitarian and civilian uses of drones. My painting Drone Spiral [below] won the Art Prize, an outreach activity of the World of Drones Congress. My thanks to Dr. Catherine Ball and World of Drones.

The New Clouds Gouache on paper 56 x 76 cm (unframed), 2017.
I am interested in how concepts of landscape are mediated and re-calibrated by contemporary technology, particularly militarised technology, reliant upon digital and cyber systems, and increasing autonomy. For example drone swarms in the sky. With this painting, are you above or below the 'new clouds', and the targeted drone?
The Body Politic Gouache on paper 76 x 56 cm (unframed) 2017.
I was inspired to paint this after attending a one day workshop "The Human Security Forum", hosted by Griffith University. One of the presenters, visiting scholar Dr. Stefanie Fishel, particularly inspired this painting..
Anthropocene Gouache and watercolour on paper 56 x 76 cm 2017.
The perimeter of the painting depicts various threats to life and the planet. However, the trees-of-life in the centre suggest an airway or conduit to hope.
Pale Blue Dot AKA: Earth Oil on canvas 90 x 100 cm 2017
Are you falling towards the Pale Blue Dot, or are you being propelled away from it? The scopic appearance, in an age of ubiquitous surveillance, is deliberate.
Drone: Enduring Presence (Meta Landing) Oil on canvas 30 x 40 cm 2017
Has the weaponised drone with its pervasive surveillance capabilities and increasingly autonomous systems already landed in our imaginations - and therefore - the future?
