Ambassadors of Goodwill

by Heidi Baumgartner, Washington Conference communication director

Tube socks pile up in stacks across the Society of Adventist Communicator's convention stage, overflowing 12 baskets and even more red tote bags. In all, they totaled 919 pairs of socks, destined to help provide clean socks to the homeless in Portland, Oregon.

I love how my communication colleagues from North America and beyond are trying to make a meaningful difference in the communities we visit for conventions.

We're communicators and bridge builders with a variety of audiences. We collect words together, craft images, plan social media campaigns, film stories, and launch websites. Why should we care about actions? Because, as Dr. Terry Johnsson from Adventist Medical Center in Portland says, "If you want words to come to life, put action into those words."

That's a good challenge for all of us! When we combine our words and actions, we have a winning solution to be ambassadors of goodwill for God.

The apostle Paul understood about the value of words and the power of actions. Paul writes in Colossians 4: "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

As an Ambassador of Goodwill, may God give you the words to pray, an attitude of service, the actions to take, and the words to share... online and offline in person!

NAD Grand Opening

Today is the grand opening of the new North American Division headquarters in Columbia, Maryland. This mission-focused building was purchased and renovated...and it is debt free. The new NAD headquarters address is 9705 Patuxent Woods Drive, Columbia, MD 21046.

In his president's report, Dan Jackson said in part, "I'm praying that God's spirit will fall on us and that we will be led...We must let Him guide us."

A Pale Horse Rides

****Find the location near you at www.palehorserides.com****

This week, during A PALE HORSE RIDES, you will meet people from the fringes of the empire—barbarians who mysteriously converted and built their faith with nothing to go by but the words of the Bible. These fearless men and women lived their faith during some of this world's darkest hours. Their lives were predicted in prophecy, and they paved the way for Martin Luther . . . and us! This short event will be held in more than 700 host locations across North America beginning this Friday, Oct. 27.

This gripping follow-up to last year's award-winning SHADOW EMPIRE series was filmed in Ireland, Scotland, Germany and Italy. To view the trailer and find the location near you, visit www.palehorserides.com

We have 17 host sites in western Washington! Thanks for your prayers, support, and attendance! This is part of your evangelism dollars at work!

Student Video Report from #SACPDX17

Washington Conference sponsored two Auburn Adventist Academy students to attend the Society of Adventist Communicators convention in Portland, Oregon. Washington Conference Hosts Local Communication Summit

by Katie Henderson, Washington Conference communication intern

Fifty-five pastors, teachers, students and local communicators from Washington Conference gathered October 24 for a Local Communication Summit to learn how to use social media effectively for the church.

Keynote trainer Jamie Jean Schneider Domm, digital strategist for North American Division, presented three topics: the best practices for social media, the use tracking, google analytics and Facebook ads to reach the target audience, and the social media mission field.

“The average adult is exposed to over 3,000 marketing messages a day,” says Domm. “We now have more resources to reach audiences how they want to be reached.”

Young adults spend 7-12 hours a day behind a screen and 5 hours on social media. Meeting people where they are and not where the church wants them to be is very important.

“I've been a faithful email user for a couple of decades, but nowadays I've noticed my church members share much of their information on Facebook and other social media,” says Maylan Schurch, pastor of Bellevue Adventist Church. “This seminar—one of the most consistently, end-to-end practical workshops I have ever attended—has impelled me to work toward making better use of our church's current Facebook page."

How do you stay madly in love forever?

Marriage is a marvelous and complex relationship. Most couples have been “mad about marriage” because they've been madly in love with each other. But most of us have also been just plain mad.

The Mad About Marriage Seminar is marriage education, not marriage counseling. Mike Tucker shares lots of stories – some from his own life – and lots of practical advice that you can really use. He also examines some of the issues that can derail marriages, drawing on current research and the expertise of a variety of scholars, authors, and psychologists to find solutions to the problems.

Mad About Marriage will be coming to Puyallup Adventist Church on November 17 at 7 pm and November 18 from 2-5:30 pm. Couples welcome! Singles welcome! Registration is required online or by calling April at (253) 848-5548.
