From the Desk of Mike Thiel - Executive Headmaster

Mid-term in term 3 gives us a moment to take a breath after what is always an emotional part of our year. During mid-term the campus is hosting two major sporting events, the 3rd Annual Afrihost Prep Cricket Festival and the Inaugural College Inanda Hoops Classic Basketball Tournament. Along with our boys travelling to other sports festivals, we wish all our boys and the staff involved everything of the best for a successful sporting weekend.

The past few weeks have been full of reflection and farewells to our Matrics as they move out of the schoolboy space into their adult lives. There are many wonderfully vibrant memories of the journey they have travelled, and the Matrics of 2017, have certainly made this a colourful and exciting year in a way that only young people are able to do. They have challenged our thinking (positively!), and grappled with what it means to be Marist, ultimately adding a wonderful layer to what this great school is all about.

Part of the rites of passage that mark this end to their schooling years is the College Speech Night on which their achievements are celebrated. This is also a time for the school to reflect on where we are, and more importantly where we are going. In the following link, you can get a sense of this direction from my address on that evening. It talks not only of gratitude for where we are, but of the new beginnings of the Marist world as we move out of the 200 year celebrations into a new journey for our school. The School Executive is always prepared to engage with our community and should you have any observations or suggestions in response, please don’t hesitate to share them with me via thielm@stdavids.co.za

Transformation & Diversity Workshop

Delegates from the staff and parent representatives, attended the first rollout of the Transformation and Diversity workshop that took place on the 12th-14th October. All the delegates agreed that it was a profound and such a positive experience that provided them with deeper understanding of transformation and diversity issues. This workshop was run by the Wits Transformation and Diversity team and was well facilitated. Delegates were given time to reflect and report back on what they felt, thought and experienced after each session and it was clear that they all learnt a lot. This has been the work of the Transformation KSD in the school under the leadership of Cynthia Nkosi, supported by the management and embraced most staff members.
ART EXHIBITION

On Monday 16 October, St Davids Prep School hosted an Art Exhibition showcasing art from boys in Grade 00-Grade 3.

SACS WATER POLO TOUR

We boarded the plane with boundless energy and eagerness to play. Set in the shadow of Table Mountain lies the SACS water polo pool. 22 teams and 127 games a tough contest for all. In swirling winds and nail bitting matches St Davids came top of our pool. Facing Sun Valley in the Quarter finals we played our hearts out and managed to come out victorious with 6-0 victory. Unfortunately we were not so lucky in the semi finals when we played St Johns with a final score of 4-2. St Johns went on to win the tournament being the first school to ever win from Gauteng. A big thanks to the Reddam families who so generously hosted our St David's boys.

Combined Montagne Day Mass
Galas (at home and away)

On 28 October 1816, three months after his ordination, Marcellin Champagnat was called to the
Montagne home in Les Palais, about 6kms from La Valla, where 16 year-old Jean-Baptiste Montagne was dying. As Marcellin prepared to hear the confession of Jean-Baptiste, he realised that the young man had little religious or academic education. It occurred to Marcellin that Jean-Baptiste was one of many young people affected by a lack of education during and after the French Revolution. It was this incident that further inspired the young Marcellin Champagne to start a teaching Order, namely ‘The Marist Brothers’ and which has resulted in a Marist footprint today in 81 countries, educating over
654 000 children and young people.

Next Friday 27 October 2017 St David’s Marist Inanda will celebrate Montagne Day, with this year being the 201st Anniversary of the date on which St Marcellin Champagnat visited the dying Jean-Baptiste Montagne.  Montagne Day will mark the closing of the formal celebrations of the 200 Years of Marist Education Bicentenary and the 150th year of Marist education in South Africa.

In remembrance of this significant event in Marist history, all St David’s boys will be encouraged to continue the legacy of St Marcellin by once again this year pledging to act in a manner that reflects the Marist values. To this end, each boy will receive a Pledge Form during their tutor period or RE lesson before Montagne Day on which they can commit to specific behaviours that they feel they would like to uphold. These pledges will be brought to the Altar, as part of the Offertory Procession, at the combined Montagne Day Mass on Friday 27 October.

As part of this pledge, and in the spirit of the Marist value of ‘Love of Work’, we would like to encourage each boy to commit to raising, through their own efforts or acts of service, R100 to contribute to the St David’s Marist Foundation Father Bernard Brewer Bursary Fund. These donations will form part of each year group’s own Circle of Friendship as per the Matric Years that they will eventually become, for example, those boys currently in Grade 6 this year will be the Matric Class of 2023 Circle.  The funds brought in by the boys will go towards giving the gift of a Marist education to a boy who may be a modern-day Montagne, in honour and remembrance of the young Jean-Baptiste Montagne and the opportunities he did not have. A portion of the donation will also go to the ‘Hands of Champagnat’ Grade 11 service portfolio committee for their 2017/18 community project.

In the interests of safety, we would prefer that the boys not carry cash to school and ask that you indicate your consent to us adding this once-off donation of R100 (or any amount you would like to gift to the School for Montagne Day) to your fee account, or that you make an EFT to the St David’s Marist Foundation account (bank details below), with the reference being your family surname + M Day. Please click here to give your consent to have R100 added to your fee account (either per son, or as a family contribution).

REFLECTION

“May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God”. Romans 15:5-7.
