Molecule World collections

New feature! Chemical and Structure collections

Simplifies preparation

When I teach bioinformatics, I want students to investigate a variety of 3D structures and chemicals.  At the same time, I don't want to spend lots of time downloading structures or chemicals when I prepare for class.

An innovation grant from Shoreline Community College helped us solve this problem and add a new feature to Molecule World–Collections.

What's a collection?
A collection is a group of structures and/or chemicals that you can easily download and open in Molecule World.

What do I need?
You'll need the latest version of Molecule World on the iPad (V3).

How do I use a collection?
1.  Open Molecule World on an iPad.
2.  Go to the Structure Collections web page at Digital World Biology.
3.  Touch the name of a collection.
4.  Click the link to the mwc file in the top row under "Download structure."
5.  Select the link to open the collection in Molecule World.

Are there activities or curriculum to support the collections?
Yes!  We have collections that go with the Ellyn Daugherty's book, the Bio-ITEST curriculum and lots more.

Are there collections you'd like to have?  Let us know!

Updates to the DNA Binding Lab

Now that we have structure collections, we decided it was time to update the DNA Binding Lab.  New features allow students to see DNA and protein sequences and use rainbow coloring to view the orientation of the two strands.

Students use the DNA binding lab collection to investigate the structure of DNA and look at the ways that proteins or drugs, like Tamoxifen, recognize DNA features - like the major (wide) or minor (narrow) grooves.

You can download the DNA structures and find instructions and answer sheets at the DNA Binding Lab collection page.

Bioinformatics instructor course

Do you want to teach bioinformatics, but you're not sure what to do?  Last year, we piloted an on-line course through Austin Community College to help potential instructors learn how to teach bioinformatics.  The course was a great success, so we're doing it again.

It begins Jan 16, 2018 and goes through mid May.  We meet by video chat once a week and talk about strategies and instruction.   We cover using biological databases (the NCBI and others), working with molecular structures, analyzing molecular sequences, making phylogenetic trees, and exploring genetic variation and the effects of mutations.

Registration will begin soon.  Sign up on our mailing list and we'll notify you when registration starts.
