MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
October 2017

As our days get noticeably shorter and the campus trees turn brilliant colors, I look forward to welcoming SPH alumni for our UMD Homecoming event this Saturday, October 28. We have many reasons to celebrate as a School of Public Health community, including how far we’ve advanced over our first ten years. A month ago, we gathered to recognize the tenth anniversary of our launch. For those friends and supporters who were unable to attend, we have prepared a SPH tenth anniversary celebration video with some highlights. Our anniversary celebration continues throughout the year, culminating in our sixth annual Public Health Research @Maryland event on April 3, 2018. Save the date, more details coming soon! Read more>>

Going viral: understanding what makes someone with colds or flu contagious

Believe it or not, scientists still don't understand how people transmit flu and other respiratory viruses. UMD students living on campus are the subjects of a new DARPA-funded study, led by environmental health Professor Don Milton, that will track disease spread and identify biomarkers to determine those who are most and least likely to transmit the virus. What your tweets may reveal about the health of your zip code

Twitter is used by many to keep up with breaking news and influential views, but Epidemiology Assistant Professor Quynh Nguyen is using it for a different aim: to predict health outcomes. She analyzed 80 million random Twitter messages over one year —a one percent sample of publicly available geotagged tweets — and found a connection between health behaviors, happiness and specific health outcomes at the county level. New Gold Award will reward SPH student innovation

The world's most complex public health problems demand innovative solutions. That's why a new competition encourages SPH students to develop new approaches to health challenges (think apps for digital health, therapeutics, prosthetic advances, remote patient monitoring and more). The School of Public Health's founding dean and his wife have given $100,000 to establish the Robert S. and Barbara A. Gold Public Health Innovation Award Endowment. The student or team with the best idea will receive $5000 and be recognized at Public Health Research@Maryland in April 2018. Read more>>
Global Public Health Scholars wash up with kindergartners

Giggles and cheers from excited kindergarteners could be heard throughout the halls of UMD’s Center for Young Children as they learned how to properly wash their hands, and used Glo-Germ gel and a blacklight to see the spots they’d missed. Read more>>
