Dear <<First Name>>
STOP PRESS: JACK WINNING NOMINATED FOR AUSTRALIAN SAILING's VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
On November 3 Australian Sailing will annoint their Volunteer of the Year. Jack has has been recognised for outstanding volunteer service along with two other finalists Matt Carter (SA) and Maree Pickett (WA).

We appreciate Jack's efforts and it's fantastic to see recognition for volunteer activity at this level as Australian Sailing is the peak body governing sailing in Australia. To read the full story on Jack's commitment to the Club over the years see the story from The Cove here.
VALE BOB KORMAN
Sadly long-time club member Bob Kornman passed away in early October at the age of 94.

Bob had a long association with the Club starting in 1972, which was only briefly interrupted in the mid-90s when he & Mildred moved up to the Northern Beaches.  They soon discovered the error of their ways and returned to Lane Cove in 2000.

Bob came from a naval background, having been brought up in Holland & the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia today), although his own sailing experience was limited to dinghies as a child before WWII intervened.  He was fortunate to escape Java in 1942, and he spent WWII pursuing U-boats in the Atlantic for the Dutch & Royal Navy.  Post war the latter gave him one of his few yachting experiences in the 1947 Fastnet Race on "Orion" - although at 8 days it was one of the slowest races in history.

Bob's involvement in the Club began with the sabots, when son Richard started crewing on a Sunday, and also coincided with the major extension of the Clubhouse, to which he contributed his skills & effort.
He subsequently followed Richard through the F11s, Lasers & 12s, and in total contributed 23 years as one of the starters.  He was on the Committee for a number of years, and Club Treasurer in 1987-88, during which time he brought 'The Book' back from a 5-figure deficit!

He was a regular at working bees and often took on projects outside of working bees to keep the club in shape, a good volunteer.  He was always interested in sportsmanship, and set up his namesake trophy to honour the Laser sailor that makes the biggest contribution to the Club each season.

In recent years he and Mildred have been regular canteen volunteers and he was a fixture in Longueville Reserve on a Saturday afternoon, watching the various classes finish, with Mildred by his side.
He will be sadly missed by all.

The family is holding an afternoon tea at the Club in mid-November to celebrate his life, and past & current members that knew Bob are encouraged to attend.  Please contact Richard or Vicki for details

CLUB HISTORY QUIZ#2
Seeing as David Griffith did so well last week, here's another couple of shots, courtesy of Ian Meggitt to test the memories. Name the sailors, the boats and where they are? Head to the Club's Facebook pages to make your suggestions.

Thanks to those who have generously shared their pictures and memories of the Club's history so far. If you have photos to share (and you know you have) please contact petmay@ozemail.com.au or on 0419 236 685.
From David Griffith on last weeks picture: "Yes it's me my mother Bev, my father Ted on the wheel, my sister Robyn is in the middle on the cabin top. On her left is probably Jill Hartigan/Curtin and on her right is probably Robyn Wills. The boat was called the Lady Bev purchased from an italian fisherman in Rose Bay around 1962. The name had to be changed as it was called Boat Satina and had a LFB.... license for fishing in Sydney harbour. The year - 1963".
THANKS FLYING ELEVENS
A great night with what must be a Class dinner record with over 150 diners on the night. This was coupled with some great sailing recollections from former Flying 11 Champions courtesy of David Rosenthall, Georgie Deal and Andrew Chapman with six championships between them!  These are some of the people (and their families) that help shape our Club's 100 year history. And for those not there the shot below is Georgie  as a well dressed young sailor at far right of the picture and Andrew and Ali Chappo collecting their F11 Championship trophies just a few years ago!
Thank you and a huge effort by all old and new
F11's parents and sailors who served up superb Indian dinner with food, music and decor. They even arranged for a 100 year cake which was ceremonially cut by John Hayward. Much appreciated.

Bring it on 12ft skiff sailors for the next Club dinner on 28 October!
