Dear Friends,

If you've ever dined at The Walrus and the Carpenter, you might have noticed, above the buzz of the dining room, perched on a high shelf, a first place trophy.  Cody Spafford won this trophy in 2013 at the Ballard Seafood Fest. Cody's trophy remains as a reminder of our "Lil Moon" - a nickname Cody earned from his coworkers for his bright and easy smile (and, because when Cody smiled, we all did as well).

Cody was one of the first oyster shuckers at The Walrus and the Carpenter.  He was a kind-hearted, hard-working young person with a fantastic sense of humor who quickly rose through the ranks in our restaurant.  By the time he gave of us notice of his plans to move to New York City, he was our sous chef.  Sadly, he left all of us too soon.

Oysters filter through gallons of water a day, holding onto nutrients, and purifying the waters around them. Our new oyster, Lil' Moon, is grown in partnership with Emerald Acres in Case Inlet. For us, Cody will always be a beaming smile, a loud guffaw, the hardest worker, the kindest friend, and a reminder that we are all greater than the sum our parts.  We all go through so much in this life.  If we can make good from bad while having a positive impact on the world around us, we’ve done alright.

For each Lil Moon purchased, a $1 donation will be made to Recovery Cafe in Cody's memory.

Take care of each other,
