Maryland Interim AD Evans chats with the media for the first time, "Pressure, that’s part of this job. That’s just something that you deal with. When you’re an athletic director — or in this case in an interim or acting role — what you have to do is match the expectations of the people you’re dealing with. And I want people to have high expectations of us. I don’t mind people putting pressure on us, because that shows that they’re committed. That shows that they care." Evans does not expect to miss a beat with FB HC Durkin as the two were already working in lockstep. The article also notes FB season tix are down 10% & the Cole Field House project nut has increased to $196M (up from $155M). More Evans: "So as football goes, well, it helps all of our other sports. Is it a challenge? Yes. But we have to embrace the challenge." (link)
Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim with an interesting comment on the latest MBB developments, "There's always been underlying thoughts that something was happening here or there. [...] It doesn't happen with Nike. Nike has about 80 schools. The guys we're recruiting, we're recruiting against three or four Nike schools most of the time. (Nike) isn't going to help one of those schools. [...] Summer basketball probably will go out." (link)
Important momentum for Washington State as the Cougars receive $500K for naming rights to FB HC Leach's office as part of an $814K fundraising week. Assoc. AD & Cougar Athletic Fund Executive Director Farkas: "I guess it’s been a bittersweet week. It’s humbling to see so many Cougs donate, and we said goodbye to a person who brought many of us on board. […] I do think it triggered a litany of people to step up to the plate. It was neat to see folks be very public with their giving." Prez Schulz also committed to becoming part of the Leadership Circle by committing $10K for each of the next three years. Supporter Hogg says his $500K commitment is a show of support to keep Leach in Pullman. Comparative data shows solid results for the CAF both against internal goals & external peer departments. (link)
As was expected, at least one notable Louisville donor has withdrawn his financial support of athletics with the exit of longtime AD Jurich. 88-year-old supporter Baumgardner had his charitable trust terms changed, rerouting roughly $6.3M worth of cash that would have gone to the Cards upon his passing. "I’m not 100 percent happy with myself for doing that, but it’s the only thing in my anger that I could think to do. ... Frankly. I have feelings about it: Have I done the right thing or the wrong thing? Have I hurt the wrong people because I’m angry at the board of trustees?" Further, Baumgardner thinks Jurich accomplished what no other leader could have. (link); Bloomberg reviews how UofL's credit rating could be impacted by the recent issues, notes outstanding municipal debt for athletics of $315.16M. Nevada gets a $1M push from alum Weir for $2.5M to $3M worth of enhancements to Baseball's Peccole Park including a new playing surface that will bear Weir's name. Additional elements: New outfield fence, new scoreboard, upgraded cages & clubhouse, plus a player's lounge. HC Bruce: "I don’t care where you’re at in the country, $1 million is $1 million. $1 million is a lot of money. I don’t think you ever expect that. I think you say, ‘Anything helps.’ Whether it’s $5,000 to put in the recruiting budget or $10,000 to buy a set of uniforms. Anything helps. Their gift just blew me away." (link)
Count Albany as another which locked down a $1M gift, this one by real estate magnate Swyer for a new digital scoreboard at SEFCU Arena & other tips. Great Danes AD Benson: "We're trying to make it a more fan-friendly environment. The great thing about the board is now it's going to be an interactive experience for our fans. You see it all the time, whether it's the kiss-cam or the dance-cam or people tweeting at the board. We feel our fans can be more of the action in between the action — timeouts, pregame, halftime, etc. It will give us a great opportunity to engage the UAlbany students." (link)
The San Francisco Chronicle's Jenkins notes some Stanford fans are miffed at a revamped donation structure that requires a $1,000 annual gift for some pairs of FB tickets. One supporter in a letter to Cardinal AD Muir, "The whole sordid business is particularly nettlesome to those of us who have filled our seats for decades. Our loyalty has been beyond question. Our reward is extortion." (link)
Now that Texas Southern is off probation, AD McClelland and BoR Chair Lewis sat for Q&A with the Houston Chronicle about the future of the Tigers program. McClelland: "Now that things are going well, the spotlight, the burden, is even greater. We can't afford to slip up. The last thing I want is for somebody to say, 'Uh, oh, there goes Texas Southern again.'" Lewis: "We cannot relax. We have to make sure that we remain the kind of program that supports student-athletes in the way it is intended to be. The NCAA didn't exactly threaten the death penalty directly, but if you read between the lines of the things they said at the time the sanctions were levied, it was pretty clear to us that if we hadn't taken steps to correct things, we could have received the death penalty by the time they made their findings." In McClelland's first year just four of 80 senior student-athletes graduated, but an average of 60 have crossed the stage in the past four years as he points to continued academic improvements under his watch. Also, proud of on the field success since his arrival in 2008, as 22 conference championships have come home to Houston. McClelland: "We are more competitive than at any point in TSU's history. We are strong in rules compliance, we are strong academically and strong on the field." More. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Damn Yankees! The Maryland-Rutgers FB and Wrestling double header that was scheduled for Nov. 4 at Yankee Stadium has been moved to Piscataway to accommodate a potential World Series appearance by the Bronx Bombers. Scarlet Knights AD Hobbs: "We were looking forward to staging this historic event at Yankee Stadium. With two weeks until the date, it was important for us to finalize details that help ensure our fans and our student-athletes have a one-of-a-kind experience. As a result of the Yankees’ amazing postseason run, there were operational concerns that called for us to make a decision at this time. It was agreed that moving the game to High Point Solutions Stadium was the best option under the circumstances. We value our continuing partnership with the New York Yankees and will be cheering them on this weekend and hopefully in the World Series." (link)

Kansas hires Overland Park law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King to assist on the Jayhawks' internal review. Assoc. AD Marchiony: "Their role is just to make sure what we're doing is correct and that we're going about it the way we should." AD Zenger, earlier in the week: "In light of recent announcements related to college basketball, Kansas Athletics discussed topics like recruiting, extra benefits and agents. We have complete confidence that our men’s basketball staff not only understands NCAA rules but also follows them." (link)
UMKC's student newspaper questions the on-campus marketing strategies employed to make sure students know about games & promo opportunities. Freshman Rodulfo: "I didn’t feel like I was informed unless I went out of my way. I feel that they should give us [more] information." Fellow student Reyes with an eternal truism, "When there is free stuff people go." Roos AD Wilson says student attendance continues to grow. (link); UMKC is the latest to go with a city skyline as its new hoops court graphical look. (link)
OregonLive's Canzano is a pretty regular contrarian & this time he takes aim at Oregon State's "Best College Town" marketing campaign, argues for something with "big time attitude," like, "DAM-nation." Specific criticism, "It makes me want to visit Corvallis and have a cup of coffee in a quiet spot that has a small bell on the inside of the door handle, alerting everyone that a customer has arrived. But what it doesn't fit is the kind of vision OSU says it has for its athletics programs. It doesn't scream, 'We're going big places!'" (link)
Northern Kentucky MBB season tix sales are up more than 66% year over year, along with a 93% renewal rate, after last year's run to the NCAA Tournament. Norse AD Bothof: "It has truly been remarkable to see our men’s basketball program flourish at a time when our fan base continues to expand. We hope that our men’s basketball program and fan base continue to grow together as NKU becomes one of the premier mid-major programs in the country." (link)
Coaching Notes: Penn State FB HC Franklin argues large programs staffs are a must to pull off major recruiting weekends with dozens of key prospective student-athletes. "Who’s making sure that the kid that got stuck in traffic that shows up late that can’t get into the game, and is managing that issue, or don’t know where to park. It’s a nightmare." (link); There's now a another full-time female AC in the NBA as the Sacramento Kings add former WNBA HC Boucek to its staff. (link); On sabbatical Coastal Carolina FB HC Moglia has a new deal that could keep him in Conway through June of 2020. New base is $400K, buyout if he exits for a G5 program is 100% of base salary. More. (link); Idaho State MBB HC Evans left all programs involved in the recent industry saga off his Top 25 ballot, "When I voted, I think maybe I was being 'rebel for a day,' And as I sit back and reflect, I wonder if that might not have been fair because I think it's not just these schools." (link)
AthleticDirectorU with an interesting entry with four Chiefs of Staff from around higher ed & college athletics to gain perspective on what goes into the key role. Duke Deputy AD/Chief of Staff King: "...in general, my job as Chief of Staff is to make sure that he (AD White) has everything he needs to make decisions." Clemson VP & university Chief of Staff Allen: "Difficult decisions are never easy, but when you are a Chief of Staff, sometimes you must communicate difficult messages to colleagues and at times, even to the president." Lots more, including thoughts from leaders at Baylor & Penn State. (link)

The Daily Reflector's Summers catches up with ECU fan & Pirate Club member Bream who's been behind the message-behind-a-plane stunt calling for Pirates AD Compher's exit. Bream: "Any business where the CEO is losing money, not putting out a good product and people aren't happy with his performance, he would be removed, and that's kind of why I'm curious as to what is happening. In addition to being removed, they certainly don't give you a five-year extension. That's where this sort of started." Bream indicates his next move may be a billboard, calls on Compher to lay out an effective vision for the ECU fanbase. (link)
Texas Tech opens the doors on its new $48M Sports Performance Center. Red Raiders AD Hocutt goes strong, "We will never be competitively disadvantaged ever again." Hocutt then points to four more projects that will further "raise the bar," a standalone $23M hoops facility, a renovation to FB's training digs, a new athletic dining hall & more space for academics. (link); Tech's Board of Regents approved a $220K design study for the dining hall, as well as $650K for the design of the second phase of the Sports Performance Center that could run $45M to $50M. The Albuquerque Journal's Grammer on Libit, "People who think he’s agenda-driven; I don’t necessarily think they’re wrong. But I also don’t necessarily know that that’s wrong." Libit: "For all the cost-cutting measures and layoffs of local newspapers, there’s still quite a few college sports reporters around the country. This is all that’s left to be done." A bit more. (link)
Three Canisius Volleyball student-athletes say they'll continue taking a knee during the national anthem & frosh Bowden says she has the full support of her mother, an Army combat veteran who spent two years in the Middle East. Golden Griffins HC Vazquez: "...how do I protect them from backlash? So I felt like the best way to do that was to help them figure out what they're trying to say and listening to them. I feel like that's what I did. We sat down and talked. They typed up statements. One was handwritten. And they just shared their stories with me. They let it out. I gave them that platform." (link)
