Punky's Reflections: YO! Provides a Safe Harbor
Many years ago, I started my human service career as a Youth Street Outreach worker sent by Vista to the East Coast. I therefore have a great appreciation both of the need for and the value of a program like our YO! program in Waikiki which is a collaboration between Hale Kipa and Waikiki Health. For YO! serves as a critical resource for those we serve who are identified as runaway, homeless and street-identified youth and young adults. YO! represents a form of a “safe places or zone,” something that has been discussed recently with regard to the homeless and houseless population in general. / More

Maluhia Opens as New HYCF Gathering Place
Hale Kipa recently joined the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility (HYCF) and other organizations serving at-risk youth to open Hālau Maluhia, a gathering place for HYCF youth and their families on the Kailua campus. This new area comprises three cells in a HYCF building formerly used for youth in solitary confinement. Over several months this past summer, the Junior League of Honolulu, a women’s volunteer organization, converted the cells into four warm, inviting spaces – a family room, meeting/dining room, sensory room, and lobby area. They are designed for HYCF youth to meet with their families and support team, as well as enjoy meals, relaxation time and recreational activities together. / More
