I love how the change of season tends to bring opportunities to reflect, renew, and create change. I have recently learned a treatment modality that I think will again create positive change and add further depth to my physical therapy practice. I want to share it with you, especially if you are someone who suffers from chronic pain, and/or has gut/abdominal issues including acid reflux.
Visceral manipulation (VM) is the practice of gentle mobilization to organs and their surrounding tissues. The same fascial system that goes around our muscles also envelopes and suspends our organs in the abdominal cavity. Movement in our organs is transmitted through the fascial system to other structures of the body such as the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. When you are healthy, there is a fluid movement between all of these structures. However, organs can lose mobility secondary to many factors, including:
- Physical trauma
- Infection
- Surgery
- Pregnancy/labor and delivery
- Poor posture
When an organ loses mobility it is likely not functioning to it's fullest potential, and also causes restrictions that the body will compensate for. These compensatory postures and movement patterns develop around the area of restriction, and will eventually create their own structural problems that can lead to chronic irritation or pain.
Imagine the scar tissue that easily develops with a routine procedure such as an appendectomy. That tissue will likely cause restrictions around the lower intestine on the right side where the appendix was. These restrictions may cause the patient to have a posture that is compressed and tight on the right side of the body, and cause low back and/or hip pain on the right. Releasing this scar tissue and mobilizing this section of the large intestine will help decrease the pain in the low back and/or hip.
VM helps the body's ability to release restrictions and correct the compensatory patterns that can cause pain, as well as aid the organ to be fully vital and healthy. VM helps promote homeostasis throughout all of our systems, and encourages fluid movement between all structures.
VM benefits:
- Low back pain
- Digestive disorders
- Acid reflux
- Post operative scar tissue
- Sports injuries
- Chronic pain
....and more! Please reach out to me if you want to know more about visceral manipulation, if you are wondering if this technique might benefit you, and to schedule a session.
Make some change in your life, and don't let pain stand in the way of doing what you love!
Sincerely,
Becky
