I love fall...I love the smells; the crispness in the air, fires burning in fireplaces, and the unique aroma of falling leaves. I love the colours on the trees and the sound the leaves make when you walk on them. That crunch is so satisfying and reminds me of autumns of my childhood back in Ontario where there are so many leaves we would rake big piles of them on the lawns and jump in them just to do it all over again. I love fall in BC though because of the mix of changing leaves and the constant Evergreens. I love that it doesn't get super cold here and you can still walk around in a t-shirt during the day when the sun is shining but snuggle up under the blankets at night. I love wearing sweaters and coats and big wooly socks.
I also love the change in wines I drink when Autumn comes. I trade in my fruity patio blends for rich Chardonnays, Viogniers, and full bodied Pinot Gris. My sweeter roses change to drier, crisp Roses and I love my reds rich...the richer the better...Cabernets, bold blends, and Foch. I love Marechal Foch around this time of year.
This weekend we are excited to feature not 1, not two, but 4 different wineries.
Friday we have Lucille pouring a selection of the phenomenal Summerhill Wines including a new wine in store, their Cabernets. A best seller for the winery and a beautiful rich red for this cooler weather.
Summerhill Pyramid Winery is one of the most awarded wineries in BC. On top of being biodynamic and organic they have a massive sparkling wine portfolio as well as their still and ice wine portfolios. The Summerhill Cipes Brut is one of the most well known BC sparkling wines and a staff favourite as well as a best seller in the store. Their Ehrenfelser has been coined the "hot tub" wine and truly is amazing on its own in a hot tub or with your spicy fare. Their Baco Noir is one of the only Bacos grown in BC and a truly unique varietal. Rich and smokey with light tannins and a lot of flavor it is definitely one you don't want to miss tasting. The 2015 vintage is all sold out at the winery too and we are lucky to have a couple cases left in store.
Saturday we have Jenn from KIS Consulting pouring wine from three of the wineries they represent. The new Volcanic Hills 2016 Pinot Gris is crisp and refreshing, a standout at the Fall Vancouver tasting we attended this past September. We are also featuring their Magma Red which is fantastic value and a very versatile wine with food. This is one of my favourite pizza or pasta night wines but it goes with quite a bit more. Also in the lineup we have Lang Vineyards who opened in 1990 as BC's "first farm gate winery". They have some very old vines on their property and have created quite a following over the years, especially for their Marechal Foch which is a very unqiue varietal to BC. Jenn will be pouring the Foch as well as their Bravo White, a super fruity and delicious blend that is perfect with your Indian cuisine, spicy stir frys, and sushi.
Lastly we are featuring the organic 2013 Aspire from Kalala Organic Estate in Kelowna. Kalala's namesake comes from the owner Karnail's grandparents. They told him a story about the village where he was born..." Long ago, in Northern India, farmers working in the beautiful and distant flatlands came upon a wolf and lamb sitting peacefully together. They believed this coexistence to be so inspiring that they moved their village to this very spot, in hopes that the same harmony would be reflected in their village, and named it Kalala, meaning Miracle Place.
Feeling that this story was reflective of the Okanagan Valley and his pursuit to grow the grapes in harmony with nature, he named his winery after this miraculous place Kalala."
Karnail's Aspire is a super rich blend, 100% Organic, and a best seller at Sardis Park so if you haven't had it yet come down on Saturday!
I hope you all have a safe, dry, and fun fall weekend as many of you will be heading to various costume parties for Halloween! Come taste some delicious BC wine to get for Tuesday night while you're waiting to hand out candy to all the eager monsters, witches, super heroes, and ghosts that will be showing up at your doors! Enjoy the sights, sounds, smells, and wines of Fall before that Old Man Winter hits before we know it. Cheers.
