WA Wild Players Attend USA vs. Canada Game in Boston

Washington Wild players Charlotte Lee (8u) and Sydney Hermanson (10u) and their fathers caught a red-eye flight to Boston Tuesday night to catch the U.S. Women’s National Ice Hockey play the Canadian Women’s National Team on Wednesday at Boston University’s Agganis Arena in front of a sold-out crowd.

After arriving at 8:00am on Wednesday, the players went on a quick tour of Harvard and picked up arts and craft materials to make signs for the game. They arrived at Agganis Arena early to watch pre-game warm-ups and to meet with Alyssa Gagliardi, and they peppered her with questions about playing for Cornell University, the U.S. National Women’s team in 2014 and 2015, and her current National Women’s Hockey League team -  the Boston Pride.

Lee and Hermanson enjoyed the speed and back and forth game of the National teams, where the US out-chanced and outshot Canada; however, the Canadian’s scored three goals in the second period--including one with 15 seconds left--to defeat the U.S. Women’s National Ice Hockey Team 5-1.

After the game, the US players (10:30pm) signed autographs for 1-1/2 hours until they met everyone in the long line. The players included Alex Rigsby, Megan Bozek, Lee Stecklein, Meghan Duggan, Amanda Kessel, and Kacey Bellamy. Special appearances were made by Kendall Coyne, Gigi Marvin, Emily Pfalzer, and Brianna Decker.

The session was highlighted by numerous comments from the US National Team players that they remembered Sydney and Charlotte from their pre-World’s practice in Everett and skate with WWFHA!

Alumnae News

2017 WWFHA and 19U Rep AA team graduate Anisa Ryan is enjoying the start of school and her new college hockey team as NCAA D3 teams begin practice and games.

Ryan attends Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin where she will study either sustainable community development or a field related to environmental policy/geology.

Anisa wears # 6 for the Jacks played her first game college against Concordia College (MN) on October 28th where the team logged their first win of the season, 2-0.

Anisa says, “I am learning a lot on the ice, in the classroom, and about myself. I'm getting better at time management, and hockey is really helping me with that. I'm missing my Wild sisters, but connecting well with my new teammates. We just finished our first game. I started out pretty nervous, but as the game progressed, I got more comfortable and confident. I definitely chose the right school for me.”

#WhenGivingGoWild - Annual Giving

Fifteen years ago, WWFHA pledged to help young females learn to skate and play hockey – to grow the girls’ game in the northwest.

This year we celebrate 15 years of girls’ hockey and growth!

Today, we are more committed than ever to bringing the sport of ice hockey, at every level, to young females in the community, but we need your help.

Will you join us as we strive to reach our goal in the months of November & December?

We just launched our 2017 campaign – Help us reach our $15,000 goal in sixty days. Each donation will fill-in/color the ‘15’ number and help with our core projects.

Through crowdfunding, our community can reach out to their large circle of friends, family, friends of friends, and fans of hockey to ask everyone for a small amount of support. A little goes a long way and sharing of our campaign does as well! Help spread the word by using the hashtag
#WhenGivingGoWild

Help us fund the four core areas that will benefit from your patronage:
  • Keeping WWFHA dues subsidized and administrative costs down
  • Funding financial aid packages for players needing assistance
  • Providing more training equipment for the teams
  • Reaching out to the community to interest more girls in playing hockey
Please contribute today if you can! A non-profit association, WWFHA operates under IRS code 501(c)(3), Tax ID 75-3028953. Thus, contribution may be tax-deductible.

Please visit this page to learn about other ways to help WWFHA besides direct donations, such as company match, company volunteering, and stock donations.

Experts' Edge: 6 Keys to a Safe Hockey Season

Although there’s really no way to guarantee injury prevention, Kevin Margarucci, USA Hockey’s manager of player safety, says there are things you can do to help your kids play safe, and stay engaged if they find themselves on the sidelines.

Margarucci, who also serves as the medical staff coordinator for USA Hockey’s National Player Development Camps, said the majority of hockey-related eye, facial and dental injuries are preventable.

“Make sure your kids are wearing properly fitted helmets with facemasks and mouth guards,” he said. “By doing so, their risk of injury is drastically reduced.”

Ask WWFHA: What the Heck is HECC?

A: The Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC), organized in 1976, is an independent volunteer organization that selects standards including test methods to validate that HECC certified equipment is made according to the selected standard.

HECC is not a standard making group but does select the standard to be used.  HECC has selected the ASTM standard for hockey helmets and facemasks for the last forty years, except for the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) from which HECC selected their half visor standard (ASTM did not have such a standard).

The HECC Certification Program involves three parts:
  1. Selection of a standard to which a third party can test submitted protective equipment,
  2. Choosing a third party validator (testing laboratory) to document that protective equipment has been made to the selected standard, and
  3. Communicating and cooperating with playing rules-making organizations necessary for proper compliance and the ultimate safety of the hockey players (at this time, this includes USA Hockey, the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
