Indonesia
New Species Discovered
According to scientists, a remote population of frizzy-haired Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis) on Sumatra has been classified as a new species of primate. The new addition to the great ape family is also being labeled as the rarest. The species was first known to scientists after a 1997 expedition into the remote mountain forests. A study published in the journal Current Biology reported that there less than 800 of the primates in existence.

This map shows the distribution of the different species of orangutans in Indonesia. The Tapanuli orangutans location is shown in the orange box.  Click on the map to learn more.
