In Focus: Scoring Goals for Gender Equality
Balls flew and goals were scored for gender equality at the all-women Global Goals World Cup in New York, held on the sidelines of the 72nd UN General Assembly. It drew on the power of sport to raise awareness of the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 5 on gender equality.
Members of the SDG5 Dream Team, comprising strong gender equality activists, included Dina Smailova from Kazakhstan. Nominated to participate by UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, she played to raise awareness on sexual violence. A survivor of gang rape, Smailova has been consulting, guiding and supporting women survivors of violence in Kazakhstan and has been instrumental in winning a series of sexual violence cases.
The event was hosted in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Denmark to the United Nations, UN entities including UN Women, civil society organizations and the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs. Read More. Learn about Smailova's first-hand experience.
