News Highlights
In Focus: Scoring Goals for Gender Equality 


Balls flew and goals were scored for gender equality at the all-women Global Goals World Cup in New York, held on the sidelines of the 72nd UN General Assembly. It drew on the power of sport to raise awareness of the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 5 on gender equality. 

Members of the SDG5 Dream Team, comprising strong gender equality activists, included Dina Smailova from Kazakhstan. Nominated to participate by UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, she played to raise awareness on sexual violence. A survivor of gang rape, Smailova has been consulting, guiding and supporting women survivors of violence in Kazakhstan and has been instrumental in winning a series of sexual violence cases.

The event was hosted in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Denmark to the United Nations, UN entities including UN Women, civil society organizations and the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs

Rural women in Kyrgyzstan call for full participation
Women’s activists meet Members of Parliament and government officials on National Rural Women’s Day to discuss barriers faced by rural women in fully participating in national development. Read more.
 
Comic competition winners announced in Ukraine
The seven winners of the “Gender Equality – Picture It!” comic competition were announced in Kyiv. Artists between the ages of 18 to 30 took up issues related to gender stereotypes, unequal care burdens and sexual harassment at work. Read More.

 
HeForShe shines in Kosovo's[1] DokuFest
The spotlight was on gender equality at the 16th DokuFest, an international documentary and short film festival in Kosovo. Art and a lively public panel on the theme “The Future is Equal” promoted the global HeForShe solidarity movement. Read More.

Local women's networks drive gender equality in Serbia
In 10 municipalities, Women Councilors Networks are empowering women in their communities. One network organized agricultural trainings; another organized the first-ever community meeting on violence against women. Read more.
Turkish Parliamentarians exchange best practices
In a study visit organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union with UN Women, Turkish deputies discussed best practices in gender equality – including gender mainstreaming in policies and gender-responsive budgeting – with Finnish and Swedish parliamentarians. Read More.

 
Moldovan media takes up promoting gender equality
Swedish journalists shared their experience in promoting gender equality in communications and journalism with 150 local journalists, students and government communications officers. Read More.
Ending Violence Against Women 

A comprehensive approach to ending domestic violence
A new programme in Kazakhstan applies a multidisciplinary approach to addressing violence. More cases of sexual abuse and domestic violence are being reported, and specialized centres in each district offer comprehensive services. Read more.
 
Young people in Kosovo put innovation into action
UN Women and UNICEF Innovation Labs are helping young people design innovative solutions to addressing violence. New ideas are taking off, like an app that educates teenagers about sexual health and rights. Read More.

 

 
New programme spotlights protecting elderly women
The UN Trust Fund to End Violence has backed a programme to increase elderly women’s knowledge about their rights, encourage them to access support services, and work with civil society to prevent violence against elderly women. Read More.
More action, stronger commitments needed in the OSCE
In Warsaw, government and civil society representatives discussed successes and shortcomings in preventing violence against women in countries of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. They agreed on recommendations to scale up action. Read More.

Upcoming Events
Launch of the Gaziantep Women-only Centre: Providing Livelihood Support Project, 8 November, Gaziantep, Turkey: The Women-only Centre aims to support the social and economic stabilization of refugee women and to contribute to their self-reliance and ability to co-exist with women from the host community. Named "SADA," the Centre provides Syrian and host community women with a protected social space with childcare, referral services and language/vocational/empowerment skills development; a platform for dialog; co-existence and empowerment. The Project is implemented by UN Women in partnership with the Gaziantep Municipality, Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (ASAM) and International Labor Organization (ILO), with generous funding from the Japanese Government.

Regional Forum on Innovation in Governance, 14-16 November, Chisinau, Moldova: Organized by MiLab, a joint UN Women-UNDP initiative, and the Government of Moldova, in partnership with regional and national UN agencies, the conference will bring together influential development actors, practitioners, civil society organizations and representatives of groups/sectors that are benefiting from innovative governance approaches, including in public service delivery, to share experience and discuss innovative solutions to address public sector challenges.

Hackathon to develop mobile technology for combating violence against women and girls, first week of December, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovnia: The Hackathon aims to inspire the youth across the country to come up with innovative technology solutions to combat violence against women and girls. An ideathon and series of brainstorming events will precede the Hackathon.
