November 2017

Welcome to The White Rose, the online newsletter of Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, Edinburgh. This is the new format for The White Rose newsletter, which was previously printed.

We do hope you enjoy reading this newsletter. Comments and suggestions are always welcome to media@osp.org.uk

Remember and change

“Remember, remember the 5th of November …”  we used to sing before firework night. November is a month of Remembering - a long-forgotten gunpowder plot on the 5th, maybe, but also All Saints on the 1st, All Souls on the 2nd, Armistice Day on the 11th, and Saint Andrew on the 30th.  I hope you will join us at OSP as we mark these times of remembering this month.

Remembering the past is always about changing the present. We remember in our time, so that we may re-learn what past generations have to show us about faith and holiness, about living and dying, and about the cost and sacrifice of war, and so make change possible.

For some people remembering is painful. I think of women who are now speaking about sexual abuse and harassment. Their remembering is an act of personal courage, but from it may yet come learning and change for our whole society.

November shows us that remembering can be transformative even when it is hard. It is an act of hope whenever we “remember, remember …” and change.

Remembrance Sunday - 12 November

We will mark Remembrance Sunday this year on 12 November at the 10.30am High Mass.

During the four years commemorating the centenary of the First World War, the OSP history group has been researching and recording the stories of OSP members who lost their lives in that war. During High Mass on Remembrance Sunday, group members will tell the stories of a few of the men who died in 1917. We will remember them and all the others with two minutes’ silence.

Each year the group publishes the stories of those who died that year one hundred years ago. This year’s volume of Old Saint Paul’s Remembers the First World War will be available to buy on Remembrance Sunday in church, or can be ordered from admin@osp.org.uk.

Please come and be part of our commemoration at High Mass on Remembrance Sunday, and buy your copy of Old Saint Paul’s Remembers the First World War - 1917.

Christ the King - 26 November

The final Sunday of the liturgical year is the Feast of Christ the King. As the Scottish Episcopal Church’s website puts it, “On this day we give thanks for Jesus Christ the servant king, and look forward to that wonderful time when all the peoples of the world will be gathered together under his gentle and loving rule.”

Old Saint Paul’s marks this important feast day with Procession and High Mass on Sunday 26 November at 10.30am, followed by a joyful parish lunch. We hope you will join us for the Feast.

Advent Sunday - 3 December

Advent begins this year on Sunday 3 December.  It is a season of anticipation and longing as we not only look forward to Jesus' birth, but also his coming again.

Advent Sunday, the beginning of the liturgical year, marks the beginning of this period of reflection. Our Advent Carol Service on Sunday 3 December at 6.30pm is a particularly reflective service set in candlelight, with music, hymns and readings offered.

OSP Annual General Meeting - 10 December

At this year’s Annual Meeting of the Congregation, the Vestry will be recommending an option for the development of the church hall and lower level. The meeting will take place after High Mass on 10 December.

At the meeting, the Vestry will also present its usual Report and Accounts on the activities of the year, and there will be elections to the Vestry, the Church’s management council. Elections will be held for Lay Representative, Alternate Lay Representative, and 2 other vacancies on the Vestry require to be filled. Nomination forms will be available in church from 20 November, and the Report and Accounts will be available in church and on the website from 3 December.

All members of the congregation are urged to come along on 10 December to take part in these important discussions about the future of our facilities.

To find out more about about the hall development option to be recommended, please see last month’s White Rose.
