Read - Athletic Director in Residence: Tulsa's Gragg
Within the 76-page tax reform bill pushed by House Republicans yesterday was a proposed change to tax deductions tied to college athletic departments. Idaho AD Spear: "When you get in front of that perspective donor and you lay out the tax deduction, sometimes it seals the deal. Schools that have lived by increasing seat back prices will see significant changes ahead." North Carolina's Holding (R): "I went to Wake Forest. We’ve got a great field house out there. Rams Club, the Wolfpack Club, all these things are a big deal. But at the end of the day, aren’t you willing to give up all these little tax preferences in exchange for not only a lower rate, but a growing economy?" (link)
Cal Chancellor Christ announces some of Memorial Stadium's ~$230M debt will be transferred to central campus for future payment, considerably lightening the load on athletics. While details are still yet to be announced, the Golden Bears' open AD job seemingly just got more attractive. Last fiscal year, Cal paid $18M toward the facility's ledger, though Christ sticks to her plan that all departments must operate with balanced budgets by 2020. (link); Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner notes the university is "about to hire a search firm" in it's AD search process. (link)
Watch: ESPN's Ley & Bilas discuss the current state of MBB & the NCAA. Bilas calls for "sport specific governance." "We need a commissioner, a small board that the commissioner reports to. Basketball needs to have it's own rules. We need different leadership." Further, Bilas does not believe a change to the one-and-done rule would effectively clean up college hoops. (link)
Sidelines: Auburn suspends a pair of student-athletes in sophomores Purifoy and Wiley, likely in connection to the MBB-FBI developments. School's statement: "To avoid any potential eligibility issues, Auburn Athletics has decided to hold men's basketball players Austin Wiley and Danjel Purifoy out indefinitely. Because this is related to an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further at this time." (link); The FBI tells Louisville it's now free to investigate freshman student-athlete Bowen as he seeks reinstatement. (link); Two Georgia Tech hoopers will sit indefinitely, though not in connection to the FBI's case. Instead, the situation looks to be centered on impermissible benefits. (link); Central Connecticut State MBB HC Marshall did not direct his squad in an exhibition last night due to a "confidential personnel matter" that kept him off the bench. (link)
Tennessee AD Currie gets one green light for a $74M phase one portion of $340M worth of upgrades to Neyland Stadium, needs full Board of Trustees support today to move forward. Points to 2021 for total completion, "That's personal for me. I really would like to see us achieve that goal by then. However, we're going to operate in a fiscally responsible manner." A whole slew of enhancements are detailed in the article in what would be the third-largest improvement project for a FB facility since 2010. Financing of phase one includes 39.4% cash ($29.156M if my math is right), then the rest in 20-year & 10-year bonds. "This project is not about this game or last week or next week. This project is about the next hundred years. We can certainly hit the pause button because we didn't win last week. But that wouldn't serve anybody very well. We're focused on long term results and long term success." (link)
More Digs: The majority of the three-story Volkar Center for Athletic Achievement at Gonzaga should be done by the end of this month and the expanded MBB locker room is nearly complete. A new center-hung and end-wall videoboards in the McCarthey Athletic Center and improvements at Volleyball's Martin Centre, Soccer's Luger Field and the Patterson Baseball Complex are all part of the "building boom" in Spokane. (link); Kentucky held a topping out ceremony for its new $49M baseball stadium yesterday as the highest beam was hoisted into place with the signatures of the entire team, coaching staff and season-ticket holders. Slated to open by next fall. (link)
Iowa Deputy AD Burke, who is currently serving as interim AD with AD Barta on leave, gave her first public comments as an UI athletics official during the President’s Committee on Athletics meeting yesterday. Despite a number of challenges, Burke described her time in Iowa City as “great,” adding: “Athletics in general is an exciting environment. No one day is the same. Every day you can come in and have a plan and most of the time that plan is going to change. Fortunately for me, I’ve been in the business for 30 years, so there’s a lot that I’ve seen and understand how to respond. I try not to react. I try to act to situations. There’s been learning situations; there’s been teachable moments in those, so it’s been great. I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to assist where I can and provide leadership.” (link)
New UW-Green Bay AD Guthrie was officially introduced yesterday, "I like the fact that they have really solid coaches here and a successful coaching staff. I can come in and enhance their experience, to go to the next level. Really excited about that. Fantastic men's and women's basketball coaches and now you see men's soccer taking off. The blueprint is set, now it's time to enhance and see where we can go from there." (link)
The AP's Russo digs in on, "What goes into deciding whether to change football coaches?" Former LSU/Vanderbilt/Indiana FB HC DiNardo: "I would suggest to you if I'm an AD I can do a better search with my coach under attack than I can by firing a coach. As soon as I fire the coach, then everyone switches to the search. So I'm distracting my opponents. Meanwhile, I've already decided I'm firing him and not only that, I've got three agents waiting to negotiate with me." Collegiate Sports Associates boss Turner: "There's no price that you could pay that's more important than having the trust in your coach." Korn Ferry's Hughes: "There's a lot of pressure on that athletic director. Most of the time it might not be that athletic director making the final decision. Could be somebody above him, maybe the president or maybe somebody on the board that's intimately involved." A bit more. (link)
Newly released documents show that several Softball student-athletes made statements about then-Louisiana HC Lotief's verbal abuse, inappropriate language and physical contact with players. One former player described the atmosphere as "brainwashed bullying culture." Some pretty disturbing accounts here and a look at Lotief's outward efforts for equality for female student-athletes. Impact of Notre Dame home FB games in South Bend: 88.6% hotel occupancy at an average per night cost of $339.84, Airbnbs average $189 nightly, up more than $100 from regular rates, $16M in overall average spending for a weekend (vs. $1.5M on non-FB weekends), this year's kick with Georgia saw 215 private aircraft land to catch the game. More. (link); Oklahoma AD Castiglione is a man of tradition... and eating good food. Before every Sooners road game he finds a diner at which to eat breakfast and typically texts a photo of his spread to "J Lo" (AKA Arkansas AD Long). His dining companions total around 15 each time, in a practice he has continued since his days at Iowa in the mid 1990s. (link)

Southern Miss AD Gilbert pens another 'To The Top' letter to the Golden Eagles fanbase, this one is focused on "OUR Vision for Athletics." Notes the importance of gathering a diversity of opinions, outlines his department's vision with alignment, mission & guiding principles, a strong & diverse leadership team, strategic & operational planning, sustainable financial models & academic achievement. "So the next time we meet, if you should ask about my vision for the future of Southern Miss Athletics, be prepared for a question in return: 'What is your vision for our future?' You see, we invite your vision to be a part of our vision. And in the end, our diversity of thought is what will make our vision strong and clear." More. (link)
In UWBadgers.com Insider Baggot's weekly look into possible bowl destinations for Wisconsin FB, AD Alvarez comments on the first College Football Playoff rankings released earlier this week that have the Badgers at #9. Quickly answering “no” when asked if he missed being a part of the CFP committee, Alvarez said he wasn’t surprised by the initial standings because the methodology for assembling the rankings hasn't changed: “It was all laid out how it was going to be run, how we would go through the meeting, how we would vote and how we would come back and double-check. It's going to be run the same way. Nothing's going to change.” (link)
NC State AD Yow weighed in on Twitter yesterday in connection to the school’s continued effort to get the NCAA to grant eligibility to MBB student-athlete Beverly this season. Yow tweeted: "All: We r committed to exhausting every possible appeal to see Braxton become eligible, since he has done nothing wrong." However, school spokesman Demarest says the university would need to have new or additional information to file another appeal. (link)
Maine plays Delaware tomorrow in Portland's Fitzpatrick Stadium in what will be the Black Bears' first regular-season appearance in Portland since 2005. AD Creech: "(Part) of our strategic plan is to embrace the opportunity that we’re Maine’s team. We’re the only Division I team in Maine. To play in the state’s population center seems to make a lot of sense." Some 50-60% of the alumni base life within an hour of Portland and 5K tickets have already been moved. (link)
The first set of Top-10 rankings from the NCAA Division I FCS selection committee are out: 1. James Madison; 2. North Dakota State; 3. Jacksonville State; 4. Central Arkansas; 5. South Dakota; 6. Sam Houston State; 7. Elon; 8. Wofford; 9. Northern Arizona; and 10. South Dakota State. Committee Chair and Wofford AD Johnson: "There’s a lot of metrics on how we decide these rankings, but I will tell you that I’ve been very impressed over my tenure on the committee with the integrity of the process and the amount of work and lack of bias by committee members. It’s routine to hear in the committee room a member from one conference pushing a team from another conference instead of being a homer if you will and promoting his team." A second set of rankings comes out next week with the 24-team playoff field announcement slated for Nov. 19. (link)
ESPN: Must go to trial for copyright infringement after a Mississippi federal judge denied the World Wide Leader's motion for a summary judgment. The dispute comes over two documentaries about the life of CFB student-athlete Mullins, who was paralyzed in the 1989 game between Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. (link); Worldwide Leader expert & best-selling author Miller says "this isn't your father's ESPN" & believes the price & package will have to be right for ESPN to re-up its Monday Night Football commitment with the NFL. Miller's thoughts were in response to SI's Deitsch tweeting that he expects ESPN to keep the deal. (link); ESPN hires NBC Universal SVP of Ad Sales, Research & Strategy Meyers as its new SVP of Fan & Media Intelligence. (link)
Hellman: Extraordinary Lockers
Kentucky AD Barnhart comments on the recent developments around MBB, "I just think it’s not a great time for college athletics. It’s not what any of us wanted. I think what we’re trying to do is try to create a different environment, and I think the commission they put together on basketball has some important work to do. I don’t know where that’s headed. I think it’s really important work. I think you’ve got a basketball oversight committee that works with the NCAA; that’s an important part of that component. And I sit on the basketball selection committee, so hopefully there will be an opportunity to weigh in somewhere along the way about the impact of college basketball and where we’re going." A bit more. (link)
Down I-64, former Louisville AD Jurich continued to defend himself during a pair of radio interviews, "They can manufacture anything they want against me. It's very disappointing." Further, Jurich believes university brass took "cheap shots" at his leadership & track record, points to the Adidas deal debate, "This didn't happen oversight." Interestingly, says he's not sure if he wants to be an AD again, but would not return to UofL, even if asked. (link)
Auburn's 10-year apparel deal with Under Armour was announced in 2015 and included $10M shares in the company. Since then, with plummeting stock prices, Auburn has lost upwards of 75% in the deal as the stock stack is now valued at just $2.3M. In February, when UA was trading at $20.67 (yesterday it closed around $11), Tigers AD Jacobs: "It's a 10-year deal so I'm not real concerned about it. We're not using it for our budgeting. It was just a great way for Under Armour to step up and do more for us and we appreciate it. So we look forward to the day that we cash in because even though it's half (of what it was worth), it's more than we had." (link)
Ohio State will discount FB tix for 2018 by more than $50 from this year's season tickets prices. Individual tickets to Nebraska will go for $120, while fans can get in the gate for $67 to see Tulane. Michigan has the biggest tag at $197 and season tix will be $639, down from $695 this year. AD Smith: "We paused, at the president’s request, to look at further reductions." (link)
What It's All About: USA Today's Schroeder with an excellent piece looking at Iowa's new wave tradition after the 3rd quarter of FB contests toward residents of the University's Stead Family Children's Hospital. Six-year-old & 44-day heart transplant Kohn waits anxiously for the third stanza to conclude. Schroeder: "Will hasn’t spoken in months, since he underwent a tracheotomy to help him breathe. He gets his parents’ attention by clicking his tongue, then communicates by mouthing sentences. Sometimes, a dad only needs to see his son’s eyes." Kohn's father: "They were huge when he saw all the lights from the (phone) cameras. This was his first night wave. I think it even caught him off guard." Kohn's mother: "A whole stadium turning and waving … it’s huge. “The kids just forget about their hospital life for just a few moments." More. (link)
Also Noticed: Missouri Provost Stokes picked as the next president of New Mexico, starts March 1. (link); Nebraska AD Moos indicates he doesn't plan for alcohol sales in Memorial Stadium as the Huskers don't "need" to make money. (link); Notre Dame will give sales from the $26 "#33Trucking" hats that are being used to promote FB student-athlete Adams for the Heisman Trophy to the Student Assistance Fund. (link); It's official, Rutgers WBB HC Stringer gets a four-year extension that will pay her $3.4M between now and it's expiration in 2020-21. AD Hobbs: "We are making investments in excellence across our department and this agreement, along with the coming practice facility, demonstrates our commitment to returning our women's basketball program to an elite level." (link); Aspire and the Ivy League partner up for the 2018 MBB and WBB Tourneys. (link); Maryland and 5050 Central do a deal. (link); Did you know that NC State has an official tartan plaid, called "North Carolina State University - Pack Plaid" in the Scottish Registry of Deeds? (link)
