The Technology:
Podcasts
by Debbie Harris

Podcasts are free, on-demand recordings that are typically in the format of a radio talk show. You can pick the shows you like, and subscribe to them. If you subscribe to a show, then   new episodes of that show will download automatically onto your computer or phone.

Listening to podcasts is a great way to get the information you want, when you want it. There are podcasts on just about every topic you can think of (and some you never thought of) and they are often very entertaining, too.

You can find podcasts in a number of places:  If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can use the Apple Podcasts app, Android users can use Google Play Music, and you can also find podcasts on Spotify.

Here are some suggestions for podcasts that you might enjoy:

Podcasts about Education

Cult of Pedagogy by Jennifer Gonzalez. A former middle school teacher, Gonzales’s podcast features interviews with teachers and other learning experts. Visit her website to check out  videos and other materials, too.

CoolCatTeacher by Vicki Davis. Every day, Davis produces a podcast that’s just ten minutes long (sometimes less) and covers an topic of interest to teachers, such as on  how to stay motivated and classroom tips. It’s well worth the listen.

Google Teacher Tribe by educator-authors Matt Miller and Kasey Bell. An engaging show about best practices and tips for using Google in the classroom.

Podcasts of Jewish Interest

Unorthodox by Tablet magazine is, well, a pretty unorthodox weekly discussion of Jewish culture and news. Some episodes are definitely not safe for playing with kids around, but it’s an entertaining and enlightening listen.

Israel Story is created in the style of NPR’s, “This American Life.” It tells compelling stories about Israeli life, and is very entertaining. Podcasts are available in both English and Hebrew.

Streetwise Hebrew is a brief and fun way to gain a little insight into Hebrew phrases. You may hear about the root of words, learn a little slang or even discover how to rebuke a mansplainer. Podcasts are available in both English and Hebrew.
