Making Urgent Care Work Better in Sheffield
We have recently launched a public consultation on how we can make urgent care work better for the people of Sheffield – this is treatment for minor illness and injuries that are urgent but not life threatening.
In summary, we want to:
- Change the way people get urgent GP appointments
Groups of GP practices will work together to offer urgent appointments within 24 hours. People will be assessed to decide if they need to be seen at their own GP practice or can be seen at a different GP practice in their local area.
- Change where people would go for minor illness and injuries
Currently, there is a walk-in centre in the city centre which treats minor illnesses and a minor injuries unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital that deals with adult minor injuries, while children with minor injuries are seen at the emergency department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. These would be replaced with two urgent treatment centres at Northern General Hospital and Sheffield Children’s Hospital which would treat both minor illness and injuries and offer booked appointments as well as walk-in appointments.
- Change where people go for urgent eye care
Currently adults needing either urgent or emergency eye care are seen at the Emergency Eye Clinic at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. In the future, urgent appointments would be offered at locations across the city with extended opening times making it easier for people to get care closer to where they live. Emergency eye care (for sight-threatening conditions) would continue to be provided at the Hallamshire.
- Improve the way people access services
These changes would be supported by an improved system where people can contact their practice or 111 and be assessed over the phone. They will then be booked an appointment or signposted to the right place for the care they need.

New Community Services
We're working with GPs and specialists from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals to design a number of services that could be run in the community, therefore closer to home for most people.
The traditional way of GPs referring patients to hospital isn’t always necessary and we are moving more services into the community to help with this.
We are currently working on how we can best deliver these services in the community. This also gives us the chance to review and re-design care pathways so there is a greater focus on how patients can be supported to manage their conditions themselves.
There are four initial community services being developed:
- Dermatology
- Cardiology
- Gynaecology
- Ear Nose Throat (ENT)
Your support is really important to us and we would welcome any general comments you may have to help us develop these services. If you are a current patient receiving treatment from any of the above services and would be keen to be involved we would like to hear from you.
Please email us at sheccg.engagementactivity@nhs.net.

Your views sought to help shape hospital services
Healthcare professionals across South Yorkshire, Bassetlaw and Chesterfield are coming together with patients and the public to help shape how hospital services could be delivered in the future to ensure local people continue to get safe, sustainable, high quality care.
Read more about the work at www.healthandcaretogethersyb.co.uk.
Patient, public, clinicians and staff are invited to get involved. In the first instance this is via an online and paper-based survey.
