From the Desk of Fabian Howard - Deputy Headmaster: Preparatory

“What shadow will you cast over others?”

“ A shadow is a dark area where light from a light source is blocked out by an opaque object” “A leader doesn’t just get the message across; he is the message. Symbolic behaviour of teaching staff is directly linked to organizational culture.
The shadow phenomenon exists for anyone who is a leader in any group, including a parent in a family and teacher in the classroom. People tend to take on the characteristics of those who have power or influence over them. Learners are no different. “ Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them” James Baldwin

Learners tend to copy and mimic qualities of their role models and teachers. They pick up things as dedication, positive outlook on things, courage, self-confidence, compassion and many others. As educators we have become life coaches to all our boys as we remind them to push harder and never give up! This usually occurs while a boy goes through or has experienced adversity, so this kind of motivation is critical.

On the backdrop of this “shadow effect”, metaphorically speaking, the shadow we cast over our boys serves to protect them from the harness of the “sun” and allow them to play freely without the constant worry about its potential negative impact. So to in the classroom; teachers need to act as the “opaque object” of protection and have a positive influence (shadow) over our boys. We need to allow our boys the freedom to make mistakes and learn, void of any negative impact, which could potentially take away from the rich experiential learning. As a school we are therefore compelled to create a narrative for coaching our boys through lifes’ many lessons. This narrative exits as our pledge to our boys and parents.

“At St David’s Marist Inanda we strive to develop Christian character and potential of every individual entrusted into our care through spiritual, cultural, academic and sporting offerings. We provide a safe, caring and nurturing environment that affords our boys the opportunity to experiment and challenge their individual and unique limits. This results in a resilient Marist boy.  As an extension of our offering, we place great significance on social responsibility, because it is this awareness of the power of servant leadership, which will develop a morally rooted, fully-contributing member of society. We further believe that a monastic, boy-friendly education creates the cornerstone for developing young men of character.”@ FromGoodToGreat.

FAREWELL TRIBUTE TO MRS MILNE

St David’s staff and parents joined the boys from Mini Marist to offer a fitting farewell tribute to Mrs Pat Milne who retires after 23 years of dedicated service to St David’s. The event was marked with beautiful singing by both the Mini Marist boys and the Junior Prep Choir. The songs and tributes applauded Mrs Milne’s passion for education and her ability to enthusiastically engage with every little boy in her care. Mrs Milne will be remembered for touching so many lives in a meaningful and everlasting way. She has certainly left a positively  indelible mark on St David’s and we wish her well in her retirement.

Montagne Day Combined Mass
Montagne Day Marist Pledges 2017
Once again this year some very heartfelt, touching and entertaining Marist Pledges were written by the St David’s boys for Montagne Day.  These pledges, together with the Mini-Marist fingerprint pledges and Staff pledges, were taken to the Altar as part of the Offertory at the combined Montagne Day Mass at St David’s last Friday 27 October.  In addition, 242 boys to date have made a Montagne Day donation towards a bursary with the St David’s Marist Foundation for a modern-day Montagne, as part of the Matric Class Year Circle group that they will be part of in time.  Should your boy still wish to make his individual or family R100 donation to the Montagne Day Bursary.

COLLEGE TENNIS NEWS

St Davids college tennis club has had a busy and successful 2017. On the first weekend back at school in January Niccolo Nahman, Sebastian Buxman, Michael Lowings and Gareth Aspinall competed in the annual St Benedict Invitational Tennis Festival. We achieved a very hard fought 2nd place in this weekend event.
The inter school league went fairly well in the first term. Our first team remaining in the premier league for yet another year. Great!! All our teams stayed in the same sections. Well played.
St Davids first team were invited to play in the St Stithians Sports Festival for the first time in April this year. It proved to be a very strong tournament but our boys played excellent tennis and finished fourth. A great effort!!
