Degrees Reach Record High

Computer science degrees double over the last five years

Five Facts To Know:
  1. Illinois awarded 40,400 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in STEM fields in 2016 — more degrees than ever before. Overall, 31.8 percent of Illinois’ graduates receive STEM degrees, compared with 28.3 percent nationally.
  2. Illinois has more than doubled its production of computer science degrees over the last five years to a record 3,273 degrees, and is the second largest producer of CS graduates in the nation.
  3. Growth in STEM degrees has been aided by international and immigrant students, who make up 35.1 percent of non-health STEM degrees and a staggering 49.9 percent of all CS degrees awarded in the state.
  4. STEM jobs are growing more quickly in Illinois than nationally — especially in computer related occupations where jobs are growing more than 5 percent annually, compared with 3.9 percent nationally.
  5. Illinois’ CS graduates are five times more likely to work in Chicago than any other city in the country, and nearly half of all CS graduates remain in Illinois - with top employers including Nokia, Allstate, State Farm and Discover.
