What’s new in the field of Patient Immobilisation, Motion Tracking, automated Patient set-up and Patient ID systems
Medical chief's solution for NHS 'safety problems'

The national medical director of NHS England warns that the way the health service is organised is putting people at risk.

Professor Sir Bruce Keogh said a central system is needed to oversee patient safety across the NHS.

He said because the nature of the current system was made up of hundreds of organisations, measures introduced to improve patient safety or address specific issues were not put into practice across the whole service.

Sir Bruce said there needs to be a way of ensuring those directives were taken up across the industry.

He told the Sunday Telegraph: "People accept that their disease has risks, they accept that the treatment may carry some risks.

"What they should never have to accept is that the way we design and deliver our services adds to that risk.

Below are two new innovative systems that enhance patient safety and security in busy radiotherapy centres

Independent Verification of Patient Identification with IDENTIFY

IDENTIFY is a cost-effective system that provides independent verification of the patient’s identification, set up and movement during radiotherapy treatment through the use of barcode/RFID solutions, surface scanners, sensors and patient tags, ensuring the right patient is in the right location with the right setup.

·         Integrated with the EMR system, IDENTIFY ensures the right setup for each individual patient. Using an RFID reader IDENTIFY automatically recognises patient and accessories for treatment. Incorrect patient/accessories means no treatment, ensured through an interlock system.

·         IDENTIFY verifies the individual positions, angulations or inclinations of all immobilisation equipment as well as the table position from initial setup right through treatment. No treatment can take place unless everything is correct.

·         IDENTIFY continuously monitors the surface motion of the patient, both from head to toe and also on a region of interest using two cameras. Any unwanted motion outside of the threshold will cause an instant beam switch off.

·         IDENTIFY can be used for SGRT. Both DIBH and gating techniques are available both using highly advanced marker-less technology.

·         IDENTIFY uses a very unique palm reader check in device that ensures it is the correct patient being treated.

IDENTIFY is manufactured by HumediQ and distributed in the UK by Imaging Equipment Ltd.

What is  Virtual Immobilisation System and how does it work?

RTrack and IR(ME)R compliance... real time warning  of unwanted patient motion for patients undergoing radiotherapy.

The Society of Radiographers have recently published "Have you paused and checked" posters. A radiotherapy IR(ME)R checklist for operators about to treat a patient.
The posters have been published to serve as a handy reminder for therapeutic radiographers.
They are desdigned in a PDF format to allow for wasy downloading and printing for display in the department as required. Sections of text can be edited to reflect local protocols.

The pause and check posters clearly state that while treating the patient they should be watched at all times, a basic safety and security procedure for all patients undergoing radiotherapy usually using conventional CCTV systems located in the bunker. While zooming into the patient and visualising them on the TV screen at all times is a requisite of IR(ME)ER, the possibility exists where unwanted patient motion may occur and may not be noticed in real time.

How does RTrak work?

RTrak is a virtual immobilisation system does not rely on physical restraint of the patient but real-time position monitoring with active patient participation…

RTrak, through the use of a simple disposable patient dot marker, tracks the position of the dot at ALL times, and the system will alarm should patient motion exceed simple pre-set distance and time tolerances. It requires no calibration and provides radiographers with information on the actual patient position at all times, allowing them to make immediate, informed decisions as to whether to stop or continue the patient’s treatment.

This low cost and simple to install upgrade adds a patient motion alarm to the existing CCTV system and enhances patient safety and security while undergoing radiotherapy treatment.
For more information please see the RTrak website, contact Duncan or Jack, our IEL distributer.

Eye Cancer Patient Treated Using Varian’s new HyperArc High Definition Radiotherapy Technology

Pioneering treatment takes place at West of Scotland Cancer Center in Glasgow

A 71-year-old eye cancer patient has become the first person in the UK, and among the first in the world, to be treated using HyperArc™ high definition radiotherapy (HDRT) technology from Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR). Using HyperArc clinicians can deliver more compact radiation doses that closely conform to the size, shape, and location of tumors while sparing more surrounding healthy tissue.

The treatment was delivered at the West of Scotland Cancer Center in Glasgow, one of the largest radiotherapy departments in Europe. Clinicians at the center were worried about potential cataracts or damage to the patient’s eyesight through using conventional radiotherapy techniques but they were able to achieve a 70% dose reduction to his lens using HyperArc HDRT.
