December 2017

Pastor Nikki's Notions

Dear Friends,

Advent begins on Sunday, December 3. As Christmas draws closer and closer, we may be inclined to ask ourselves, "Am I ready for Christmas?" Of course, this question can mean a variety of things. It could be translated, "Have I selected all of the right gifts for my loved ones?" It could also mean, "Have I prepared the perfect menu for the gatherings I will be hosting?" Or perhaps it means, "Have I successfully transformed my home into a winter wonderland?" Of course, it could also refer to all of the the general busy-ness the holidays bring into our lives. We might ask ourselves, "Am I prepared to run from event to event? To have myself double-booked? Am I ready to deal with holiday traveling and all of the anxiety that comes along with it? Am I prepared to be completely exhausted by the time Christmas finally arrives?" We may ask ourselves these questions. And certainly, there is nothing wrong with asking ourselves about these things. After all, we want to see our families and friends at Christmastime. We want to give gifts that bring joy to our loved ones. We want things to go well. And so we must prepare.

But I am not entirely convinced that these are the only things that ought to spring to mind when we wonder whether or not we are ready for Christmas. After all, the real question Advent calls us to address is, "Am I ready for Christ to come into my life?" This question is not as easily answered as the others. It is one that can only be answered through calming our minds and our souls, and listening for the voice of our savior anew, being born again and again and again into our lives. As Mahatma Gandhi famously spoke on the subject of Christmas, "Although we sing, 'All glory to God on High and on the earth be peace,' there seems to be today neither glory to God nor peace on earth. As long as it remains a hunger still unsatisfied, as long as Christ is not yet born, we have to look forward to him." This is precisely why we must continue to wait and watch for our savior. We still stand in need of the Christ-child to be born anew into our world, we still wait and hope for the Kingdom of God to be established on earth, for implements of war to no longer be use, for our hearts to overflow with joy, for angels to fill the sky with singing, for love divine to reign over us, for our deepest longings to be fulfilled. And so, dear friends, let us wait, even in our need. Let us continue to wait in hope for the birth of our savior! It is my prayer that your Advent waiting will be blessed.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Nikki

Christmas Eve Services

DPC will offer two worship services this Christmas Eve.

First, we will hold our regular Sunday morning worship at 9:30 A.M. This service will focus on telling the Christmas story, using a number of Bible readings and short reflections on them. There will be a surprise interactive element for any children in attendance!

Additionally, we will celebrate Christmas Eve with a candlelight service of lessons and carols at 5:00 P.M.
Communion will be served at both services.

Santa’s Helpers for Knoll Crest Kids

The property manager at Knoll Crest has had some medical issues recently which did not allow us to get the Christmas Wish Lists from the children at Knoll Crest.  Rather than have the families go without presents under the tree, we have come up with a Plan B for us to maintain our local mission project.

We will be ordering Gift Cards in $25 increments from Target, Walmart and Kohls for the families and will distribute them to the families on Sunday, December 17so they have enough time to purchase gifts for their children.  All of the gift cards will be ordered through our DPC Scrip Program, so you will be helping not only the Knoll Crest families have a better Christmas, but also supporting our church by using the program.  We are going to make this really easy for everyone.  Please follow the instructions below if you feel so moved as to help out the Knoll Crest families:

  1. Email me (Lynn Marsh) with the dollar amount of gift card or cards you would like to donate and if you prefer Target, Walmart or Kohls for the card.
  2. Put a check made out to DPC SCRIP in an envelope in my mailbox at church or hand it to me on one of the next two Sundays.
  3. I will be ordering the cards on Sunday, December 10, so that they arrive by the 17th to distribute to the families.  Please let me know by 12/10/17 if you would like to make a child’s Christmas a little brighter.

Lastly, I have attached the most recent SCRIP order form for those of you that may be giving gift cards as gifts for the holidays.  The percentage listed next to the Retailer/Restaurant is the amount that DPC receives.  Please complete the attached form and follow the instructions for getting me the form and check in Steps 2 and 3 above.

All gift cards will be here on Sunday, December 17in time for Christmas giving.  Please use it as well for any of your regular shopping (grocery, gas, movies, restaurants).  I will only be placing this one order in December to save on the shipping cost so that the majority of the funds go to DPC.  It costs $8.50 to ship the cards Fed Ex for every order so if I do one large monthly order you can see how it saves on costs.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email me (LMJRMARSH@GMAIL.COM).  I would be happy to explain the program to anyone that is new to it as well.

DINNER FOR EIGHT

On Sunday, January 14, 2018,  a new way to socialize with those in your church family begins.

Dinner for Eight!

This will consist of groups of 8 "twosomes" (couples or 2 singles that pair up) hosting dinner at their home once a month, rotating with the others in their group. So, four homes, four twosomes, rotating hosting. The host will provide the main course and drinks while the other 6 (3 twosomes) bring salad, bread, sides, dessert.

This will be a great way to meet new friends and reunite with old friends in a home-like atmosphere.  Please watch the bulletin board for a sigh-up sheet this month so planning can begin!

For any questions, contact Sherrie Savageau at ssavageau@wi.rr.com.

ADVENT ADULT EDUCATION
This Advent, we're trying something new for our Adult Education series. We are teaming up with Christ the King Lutheran Church to present a very special series. We will be basing our class on a book entitled, "Awaiting the Already." It explores the contributions that each of the gospels make to the Christmas story and helps us to understand the unique viewpoint of each of the authors. This series will take place on Wednesday evenings at Christ the King Lutheran Church. There will be a dinner at 6:30 P.M., followed by a discussion about the book at 7 P.M. The sessions will be held on Wednesday, November 29, Wednesday, December 6, 13, and 20, and Wednesday, January 3. Pastor Nikki will meet anyone interested in going at DPC at 6:20 P.M. and go to Christ the King with them. Feel free to come for the dinner, the discussion or both! Hope to see you there!

2017 Stewardship

Through October, we are about $16,000 short in our giving compared to what was pledged for 2017.

Some of us choose to wait until late in the year to meet our commitment. This is simply a reminder to all that the end of the year is fast approaching. If someone is in a situation where they feel they will be unable to meet their pledge, please advise Pastor Nikki or someone on the Stewardship team. We understand that circumstances can change, and if we know that sooner rather than later, we may be able to adjust accordingly.

Blessings to all.
Doug Lurvey,  Stewardship and Mission Ministry.

Opportunity to Serve

It has been my pleasure to serve as Clerk of Session for a number of years now. Due to changes in our lifestyle we are spending more time away from Wisconsin. It seems clear to me that our church needs a clerk who is here on a more regular basis.

Please prayerfully consider if this is a way you may serve and make a meaningful contribution to the life of our congregation. I will be available to share more information about what being Clerk of Session entails and ultimately coach anyone willing to take this on.
Thank you,

Carol Snyder
