Great Yarmouth parish register 1558 to 1653

Warriors and Witches

NORAH has recently teamed up with the Towne Family Association to fund the conservation of Great Yarmouth’s first parish register and to promote its historical importance.

The register records baptisms, marriages and burials which took place in the town from 1558 to 1653. Containing more than 130,000 names, it is a vital resource for local and family historians in England and around the world. Famously, the register links Great Yarmouth with the Salem witch trials in the United States. Professions are also included towards the end of the register, including the burial of many soldiers.

The register is an integral part of Great Yarmouth’s long and significant history and helps prove it was a populous and influential place. This project will enable members of the public to learn about the register’s significance and repair through talks and exhibitions. The first of these public lectures is due to take place in early March in Great Yarmouth Minster.

Volunteer at NRO cataloguing political squibs

After Morningthorpe

Since NORAH’s Morningthorpe appeal and the subsequent auction, the Norfolk Record Office has produced a basic catalogue of the items purchased. This makes it easier to find items of interest and to freely consult the documents in the NRO’s public research room. The catalogue can be consulted online using the collection’s reference of MC 3243.

In addition, a volunteer at the NRO has recently listed in detail the political satirical writings (NRO ref. MC 3243/71-81). These documents are of great interest to anyone interested in the way local politics was carried out in Norfolk during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

As well as showcase events and a public exhibition, the Morningthorpe documents feature in the day-to-day work of the NRO and Norfolk Heritage Centre. For example, the Walter Clutterbuck album has already featured in events showcasing the Heritage Centre’s fantastic photographic collections, and will play a prominent part in workshops planned for 2018.

Peter Williams CBE, Chair of NORAH

Meet the Trustees

NORAH is delighted to have recruited several new trustees to help establish the charity. The enthusiasm and experience they bring will really benefit NORAH.

Peter Williams CBE, the Chair of NORAH, retired as Chief Executive of The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) in 2009, after a career in and around higher education administration, including as Deputy Secretary of the British Academy and Secretary of the University of Leicester Medical School. He now chairs the British Accreditation Council and is a Trustee of Richmond, the American International University in London. He was also previously Chair of the Leicester Group of the Victorian Society.

Peter lives near Honing. He is keen to see NORAH develop the potential of local archives and records to enrich the lives of the county’s population by revealing the histories of its forebears and the places where they lived and worked.

History Talking

NORAH has recently launched a register of talks on Norfolk’s history. It is an ever-increasing list of talks delivered by engaging experts on many different aspects of the county’s past. The register is aimed at anyone who is responsible for putting together a programme of events for their group or society and include an online booking form. Groups who book a talk using the register, are invited to make a donation to NORAH. The register is available on NORAH’s website.
