Just Around the Corner - November 2017

Pastor’s Pen

On November 5, we will celebrate All Saints Sunday, and remember those friends and loved ones of the church that have passed away in the last couple of years.

In the early Christian tradition, saints’ days began as a way to mark the anniversary of a martyr’s death – his or her “birthday” as a saint. By the middle of the church’s first millennium, there were so many martyrs that it was hard to give them all their due. All Saint’s Day was established as an opportunity to honor all the saints, known and unknown.

In the Reformed tradition and Presbyterian denomination, while we give thanks for the lives of particular luminaries of ages past, the emphasis is on the ongoing sanctification of the whole people of God. Rather than putting saints on pedestals as holy people set apart in glory, we give glory to God for the ordinary, holy lives of the believers in this and every age. We give thanks for members of the community of faith who have died in the past year and all who have left their mark on our faith. We also prepare for the day when we all may be counted among the company of the faithful in the church triumphant.

This All Saints Sunday, we will rejoice and give thanks to God for the saints throughout the ages and the saints from our community who have joined the ‘great cloud of witnesses’. We will remember the pain that we all endured at their loss and the grief that death brings upon us all. We will also remember, and here particularly rejoice, in the full life that those who have died now live with God.

These are the members and family of Shady Grove that we have lost in the past year.

Parish Nurse Notes

Here are a few hints to lower the costs of prescription medications: 1. Enter the name of the drug on the website goodrx.com and click on "find the lowest price" and it will list all local pharmacies and the price of the medication in order of the least to the most expensive. 2. Ask how much it will cost if you pay cash instead of using your insurance where you make the co-pay. There are middle-men who negotiate the prices of medications with drug companies and this sometimes makes our co-pay, even with your insurance, higher than if we just paid cash. Pharmacists cannot volunteer this information to us (current law) but they can tell us if we ask them!
