November 2017

Remembering Our History

Dear Friends and Family of Roedde House,

We have had a glorious fall season here in the West End, our lanes lined with various shades of gold and red.

The change of seasons also signals a time of remembrance for us. The first members of the Roedde House Preservation Society fought against the demolition of the homes in Barclay Square because they felt it was important for future generations not to forget the city's history. Today we continue this legacy of remembering, especially in November, as we take time to pay our respects to the memory and contributions of those who are no longer with us.

In light of the significance of the season, our November Classical Concert, taking place during the Remembrance Day weekend, is etitled "In Memoriam". The afternoon's show will be dedicated to the memory of Philipp Benjamin Krebs, a graduate of the Science Department at UBC and the son of museum member Johann Krebs, of B.C. Pianocraft, who meticulously restored our piano earlier this year.

Our annual Remembrance Day Exhibit, dedicated to the history of men and women who fought bravely for Canada, will be on display from Tuesday November 7th until the end of the month. Curator Cam Cathcart will focus this year on the Canadian involvement with the Korean War.

We wish you and loved ones the best this November,
Alyssa & Annika

Winston and Daniel will be exploring the unique possibilities of a two keyboard instrumentation- featuring piano and electric piano in the parlour at Roedde House.  They will be joined by the wonderful Joe Poole on drums.  Musical selections will include works by Michel Legrand, Steve Swallow, Chick Corea and George Cables, as well as some original compositions.  It is sure to be a fun evening of music!

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors. Show begins at 7pm. Please arrive 15-20 minutes in advance.

On Sunday November 12th, the Roedde House Classical Series is proud to present 'In Memoriam' featuring Ben Goheen, cello, and Bernard Duerksen, piano. Please be sure to purchase your ticket early to avoid disappointment, as these concerts tend to sell out.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors. Show begins at 4pm. Please arrive 15-20 minutes in advance.

Roedde Re-Cap: "Scientific Methods of Madness"

This past "Halloweekend", Roedde House was delighted to host UBC scholars Shannon Payne and Rebecca Sheppard for October's Reading at Roedde Victorian Crime Panel. Shannon and Rebecca presented on the topics of unsound minds and bodies, respectively, according to Victorian definition.

In particular, Shannon presented on the research of criminologist Cesare Lambroso. Lambroso sought to mark guidelines for traces of the "born-criminal" in people's physical bodies. Shannon also presented some photographs and findings from the Vancouver Police Museum's archives. We would like to especially thank Catherine Driver of the VPM for working with Shannon in the archives!

Rebecca gave a compelling presentation on mesmerism, "the belief that there existed an invisible magnetic fluid that could connect individual minds" and therefore make innocent people commit crimes. She brought up various examples of literature that depict mesmerism, along with the historical fact that author Charles Dickens thought himself to be a successful mesmerist! Rebecca also talked about how, despite experiencing a low crime rate, English Victorian society was very much enamoured with crime due to journalism's large coverage and sensationalism of it. Many voraciously consumed the reports of the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court of England and Wales

Guests enjoyed a wine reception after the talk. Roedde House baker and volunteer, Jane Newton-Moss also set out a lovely seasonal spread of pumpkin tarts, Devil's Food cupcakes, and pumpkin seed rice crispy squares! Many thanks to our team of volunteers Mike Murgatroyd, Chris Donald, Anna Marsh, Denise Nguyen, and Sheila Giffen, who kept the tours and event running smoothly and our guests feeling welcome.
A Jane Austen Christmas at Roedde House Museum

This Christmas, join some of Jane Austen’s most beloved characters for an evening of music and entertainment at the Roedde House Museum. It’s time for Lizzie and Darcy’s annual Christmas party, and there are two new arrivals in the neighbourhood: the Dashwood sisters. Will flighty Marianne and sensible Elinor fit in with the Darcys and their crowd, or will we see an epic clash of wits to do Ms Austen proud?

This production is being staged by A Bunch of Actors theatre company and collective. It is directed by Julian Legere. Please follow their Facebook Page for updates on tickets and show times.
