Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) has a vital part to play in meeting the demands of the National Curriculum and in achieving the goal of preparing young people effectively for life beyond school. Statistically LOtC activities are, and remain, very safe. Good planning and management, and professional decision making will help to ensure that they remain so. At the time of writing there is no formal Government advice against school trips.

Guidance on the use of adrenaline auto-injectors in schools
From 1st October 2017 the Human Medicines (Amendment) Regulations 2017 allow schools to buy adrenaline auto-injector devices (epi-pen etc) without prescription. These must be for administration to a pupil at the school who is known to be at risk of anaphylaxis and requires the product in an emergency. Use of emergency auto-injectors should be subject to a protocol forming part of the establishment’s medical conditions policy.
New Learning Away study ‘The state of school residentials in England: 2017’
A new study examining ‘the state of school residentials in England: 2017’ has been released this week by Learning Away. The study, which assesses the quantity and quality of residentials currently delivered in schools, is the first of its kind in England.
Based on analysis of data from tens of thousands of schools and educational establishments using EVOLVE over the last five years, it found that far too many children are missing out on these powerful learning and life experiences, with only one in five children experiencing a residential every year! Waivers/Risk Acknowledgement Forms and Disclaimer Statements
An issue we have touched on recently when we have been looking specifically at Trampoline parks is the requirement by the centre for participants who are under 18 years old to complete a waiver/ disclaimer. However it is not only trampoline parks which operate this policy, other providers of activity may insist on treating school groups in the same way as they would a booking for a birthday party or family.
