Battery Collection Week returns November 6–10

Batteries are accepted year-round at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Depot, and during Battery Collection Week residents serviced under Barrie's municipal curbside collection program can place batteries curbside for collection on their regular collection day. Collection bags and instructions were delivered by mail, and are also available for pickup at select facilities. Get full details.

Military Heritage Park now open

Honouring the military is an important part of our heritage. Barrie’s Military Heritage Park officially opened last week, located on the waterfront just east of the Southshore Community Centre. In addition to its ceremonial square, educational displays and signage, the park contains passive landscapes that provide a self-guided, educational experience, and interconnecting trails that will be integrated into Barrie’s Waterfront Heritage Trail.

Feedback wanted on Heritage Strategy

The City’s draft Heritage Strategy focuses on tactics to conserve, protect, enhance and celebrate Barrie’s cultural heritage resources. Before it’s finalized, we want to ensure it reflects community feedback. The feedback survey is open until November 5; please share what heritage means to you, select which known action items should be prioritized, and help identify if any other actions could or should be included. Learn more.

Beat the silent killer

In Ontario, more than 65% of injuries and deaths from carbon monoxide (CO) occur in the home—even though the Ontario Fire Code requires homes with fuel-burning appliances, a fireplace or an attached garage to have working CO alarms outside of each sleeping area. In recognition of CO Awareness Week, November 1–7, Barrie Fire and Emergency Service reminds you to prevent carbon monoxide at home.

Disconnect to protect, and save money!

While taking care of that dreaded fall yard work, residents are encouraged to check if they can take advantage of the Disconnect to Protect Rebate Program. If pipes from the eaves trough or sump pump lead underground, there is a good chance you can save money—and reduce the risk of flooding—by ensuring your sump pump and downspout water is redirected to your lawn, garden or rain barrel.
