: New opportunity below at Texas. Post your team opportunities where thousands of administrators start their mornings. Upload a job here.
Drake's hire of Marquette Deputy AD Hardin as its new boss led off a busy day of AD news. Hardin grew up in Des Moines & was a Drake Relays champion as a high school student-athletes, so his familiarity with the city & community should be strong. DU Prez Martin points to Hardin's "reputation for success and integrity in all facets of athletic administration" as two reasons he's excited about the addition to his senior leadership team. (link); Des Moines Register columnist Finney challenges Hardin to lift the Bulldogs brand to an even playing field with Iowa, Iowa State & Northern Iowa. "I want to see how you're going to solve the buzz problem. Simply put, Drake athletics need juice. […] You've got to make Drake athletics hip, something that's cool to support. I think the enthusiastic minds of youth at the social club are an excellent place to start. Drake likely will never be first in the hearts of Iowans, but you would be easily the most successful Drake athletic director in history if you made the Bulldogs first in the hearts of Des Moines." (link)
Hofstra AD Hathaway will step away from his leadership of the Pride at the end of next June. University Prez Rabinowitz: "Thanks in no small measure to Jeff's leadership, the Hofstra Pride has a strong foundation, excellent professional staff and unparalleled facilities." Hathaway says he's equally satisfied with the academic accomplishments of Pride student-athletes over his six years as he is with competitive or infrastructure wins. In addition to sticking around Hempstead through the middle of next year, Hathaway will stay plenty busy as a member of the NCAA's new Commission on College Basketball. Search for a new Hofstra AD to "being shortly." (link)
Finally, two-plus year Florida A&M AD Overton will exit Tallahassee for the top seat at Kennesaw State. Overton points to a desire of getting closer to his family, especially with his oldest son's senior year in high school coming up, plus, "Kennesaw State is a huge institution that’s growing with 35,000 students. There's a lot of huge upside in what they want to do to grow athletics. I feel strongly that FAMU and interim President (Larry) Robinson and (BOT) Chairman (Kelvin) Lawson are going to carry the torch and get somebody to continue to execute the strategy we laid out." Overton made some strong moves during his tenure with the Rattlers, will head north to begin with the Owls in December. (link)
Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame & Clemson, in that order, for the first College FB Playoff ranking. Committee chair & Texas Tech AD Hocutt noted the "passionate discussion" on spots three through seven (Oklahoma, Ohio State & Penn State the others). Here's Hocutt's segment on ESPN last night providing context to decisions made by his group. (link); Here's the full Top 25. (link); Yahoo's Forde writes on the Big 12, Big Ten & Pac-12 all finding themselves on the outside of CFP access as it stands now. Though it would take a lot of chalk, "If commissioners Jim Delany and Bob Bowlsby and Larry Scott are left out of the ultimate party at the expense of the cocky SEC and arrogant Fighting Irish? The blown gaskets could number in the gazillions." More. (link)
Southern Miss & Adidas lock arms in a seven-year deal reportedly worth more than $4M in total product allocation & another six-figure annual budget for product activation. The deal runs from 2018 through 2024-25. Golden Eagles AD Gilbert: "We will benefit by partnering with Adidas. We talked to all the apparel companies but this one was the one that fit our needs the best. This is the first-ever apparel partnership for all sports at Southern Miss, which I think is a big deal. And the numbers I’m looking at for other schools, this deal will put us in the upper-third of all Group of 5 schools. So we’re in pretty good company once this deal shakes out." (link)
Nebraska FAR & former Committee on Infractions member Potuto pens on the real issues behind the NCAA's North Carolina decision, "The problem is in the principles embedded in the new academic legislation. They underplay the need of all institutions to have some baseline assurance regarding campus academic standards. They also underplay the inevitable proof problems in showing a failure of bona-fide assessment of academic rigor or of showing impermissible academic assistance as defined in the legislation." Potuto advocates for a redefinition of "substantial academic assistance," as well as regulation around staff members turning a blind eye to overcompensated academic support & extra benefit components. In closing, "If, as I hope, the current uproar reflects a sustained dissatisfaction with the academic reform legislation, then amendments need to be proposed as soon as possible." (link)
Yahoo's Forde & Thamel continue the beat with comments from former Big East boss Tranghese, Big Ten Commish Delany, as well as Potuto on the latest MBB developments. Tranghese: "I just don't have any faith in the system. [...] Every school says we need to improve enforcement. But every school goes before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and cries bloody murder." Delany: "Clearly, this is not a shocking development." Potuto: "I don't say it's necessarily the fault of the association, but it exists." Former U.S. Attorney & another former COI member Howard chimes in, "I’d be surprised if whoever is the lead prosecutor doesn’t sit down with the NCAA and say, ‘You need to stand down.' I’d be very surprised if the NCAA didn’t cede to that." Lots more, including one unnamed AD saying the outcome could be ugly, but that they may be the best for college basketball. (link)
Big East Commish Ackerman continues to ask why women can't coach male student-athletes, "What bothers me is the men seem to have two career paths — they can coach men or women’s basketball — while the women only seem to have one, and that’s to coach women. People assume that the only job women can do is coach women’s teams." With Marquette's Kieger as the only female WBB HC in the Big East, Ackerman also sounds off on a lack of landscape knowledge by leaders in the hiring process, "After last season, I got two calls from athletic directors not in this conference who were looking for women’s basketball hires and they just thought I would know. My observation is that people just don’t know who is out there. I think the pipeline has to be developed, fortified and nurtured." (link)
Under Armour takes another dip, this time due to its first-ever quarterly sales decline. UA boss Plank: "2017 is a reset for our business and our brand as we try to operate as a bigger company." The company will exit the wearable hardware business & Prez of Sport Fashion Pruess is out. For the year, Under Armour's stock price is down 57% & closed the day at $11.53. (link); Here's the full earnings call transcript for more Plank & company takeaways. (link)

Montana gets a $2M committment from the Feist Family Foundation and the Grizzly Athletics Hall of Champions will be accordingly renamed for a 15-year period. Money also goes toward facility improvements, student-athlete support & MBB. Griz AD Haslam: "The funding will provide critical support to one of the most high-profile spaces on campus, the Grizzly Athletics Hall of Champions. There is a constant need to keep the displays maintained and current. This gift will allow for that, along with supporting many other priorities within the athletics department." (link)

Coverage of new Nebraska AD Moos continues as the new boss says the Huskers fan base wants a FB product that matches its own dedication, "I'm not saying this (coaching) staff cannot do that. They very well may be able to do it. I still need to decide that and really dissect it." Ultimately, "We need to get back to being Nebraska. There's a championship mentality here somewhere, and we've got to rediscover it and get it back into place." (link); Watch: More Moos in a long Q&A with HuskerOnline's Peterson. (link)
Eastern Illinois AD Michael presented to the Faculty Senate on his department's budget, but was met with some criticism from economics professor Abebe who said he found "no discernible wisdom" in the plan, saying "Perhaps, we are over-estimating the ability of the athletics department to improve revenue streams, perhaps that’s one issue. Second, we’re, perhaps our budgeting, does not take into account our institutional situation." Michael responds: "Being fiscally responsible was absolutely what was important for us as an athletic department to be an entity within the institution. ... A 45 pound weight weighs the same whether it’s got the nice logos on it, it’s bright and shiny, or if it’s rusty and beat up, like some of ours are, it still weighs 45 pounds. But to a 17-year-old kid, they’ll think that the nice, fresh, shiny one is going to make them bigger, faster, stronger, than the one that’s been used." Goes on to say that cutting sports "concerns" him because it could have a "negative impact" on any momentum for the Panthers. (link)
It's Personnel: Texas A&M AD Woodward hires Syracuse Director of Academic Services Fields as the new Assoc. AD for Academic Services in College Station. (link); Looks like Rutgers WBB HC Stringer is getting a new deal that will increase her pay of $935K from last year. No hard details yet, but the new pact is described as a "four-year, incentive-laden contract." (link); Ball State WBB HC Sallee gets another extension, this time through 2022. Sallee will make $230K this year. (link); Iowa AD Barta says he'll be chatting with FB OC Ferentz after the latter's outburst in the press box last week reportedly directed toward replay officials. (link)
The Ringer's Sherman wonders why some 'Power 5' leagues burden themselves with divisional alignments that end up being a hindrance for balance of power on the gridiron. Forget about the causes, let's skip to Sherman's proposed solutions. Alongside SB Nation's Connelly, Sherman points to a structure of four-school pods that would maintain key rivalries, but shift around according to results to better ensure the most-deserving programs end up in championship games against one another, along with the benefit of playing every league foe within a four-year window. (link)
Really solid read on the sponsorship landscape from this week's SBJ. Of note is the trends away from hard assets & toward content. American Express VP of Entertainment Marketing & Sponsorships Curtis: "The future of sponsorship has to be less about singular, transactional moments and more about meaningful connected moments." NBA Deputy Commish Tatum: "It’s about the story you can tell together and how that story can be aligned with your brand. That’s how our jersey badge program has been able to attract new sponsors like Harley-Davidson, Rakuten, and Disney. Yes, it’s a new piece of [ad] inventory, but it’s a great connection with the team beyond that." More, in both length & useful perspective. (link)
TV/Streaming/OTT: Total minutes of sports consumed this year, through Sunday, FOX & FS1 at 229.7B, ESPN & ABC at 229.4B. Fox Sports EVP Mulvihill notes how ESPN/ABC won this measure by 97B back in 2014. (link); Here's something to consider: In October 632K cords were cut, but 900K new OTT accounts were created. If ESPN & others are getting close to the same carriage rates on OTT as traditional systems, then its top line revenue... (link); Breaking down more data from McKinsey's recent data on consumption trends. Two key notes: 1) Create lots more "whip-around" coverage to keep millennials engaged; and, 2) "Older generations (Gen Xers in particular) are adopting digital technology almost as fast as millennials, and fans’ online behaviors are far better signals of purchase intent." (link); Now this seems amazing: Field-side & court-side signage that could be changed by broadcasters according to the viewer to better target brands. Hellman: Extraordinary Lockers
With two $500K gifts at Washington State since he took over October 16, Interim Cougars AD Johnson lauds the efforts and former AD Moos, "The fundraising, marketing, all the external areas are just terrific, they’ve done a terrific job and we’re going to continue to move forward. We all loved Bill [Moos], we’re going to miss him and we appreciate all he did for us … But we have a big-time staff all through this department, as good as there is in the country and as good as I’ve ever been around." Agenda items for Johnson during his potentially three-month appointment: 1) Keep truckin' with fundraising and 2) Continue facilities updates, including a $28M indoor practice facility, baseball clubhouse, Gibb Pool restoration and academic center. Johnson: "It always takes a village to do good development. It’s a privilege to work at Washington State, it’s a privilege to be the interim … we have as good a staff as there is in the country and we’re going to continue to move forward, and we look forward to working with the next athletic director to take us to the next level." (link)
On the ongoing attendance challenges for SMU Football, HC Morris, "We're putting a good product out there. Now it's time to show up. ... Coming here, one of the things I kept hearing over and over was, 'Coach, you got to put a product on the field that everybody will be proud to support.' I think we've done that. We appreciate those that are out in support. ... [Friday's crowd] was disheartening. I'm not going to sugarcoat that." The Mustangs drew just 14,930 for a Friday night kick with Tulsa. AD Hart: "It's a multi-faceted process, effort, strategy that I think is more incremental. We look a lot at what TCU has done to get to where they are. If you look at the data at their sales and attendance pre-Big 12 and ours, there's room for improvement for us but the data's not leaps and bounds different. So we've got to be realistic how to work through how to solve this problem so as not to get discouraged. While there is not an overnight solution, Hart hopes to see some response from fans on Saturday now that the team is bowl eligible and facing a top-15 opponent. What motivates us is our student-athletes. They deserve to feel supported. It's a priority for us." (link)
Two South Dakota FB student-athletes have turned themselves in on charges of sexual assault. Both have been suspended indefinitely from the team. AD Herbster: "South Dakota athletics is taking this accusation very seriously. ... We are steadfast in our support of the university’s commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for all students." (link)
Now This Is Scary: I wasn't aware that ADs dressing up for Halloween was a thing, but obviously I haven't been paying attention to BYU boss Holmoe, who went above & beyond again yesterday. (link); Houston boss Yurachek got in on the action, I think, inside a dinosaur inflatable. (link); MAC Commish Steinbrecher might not have gone full costume, but the dude can carve a mean pumpkin. (link); SBD/SBJ's Smith pulled off a pretty solid Larry Culpepper. (link)
Around Higher Ed: New Mexico Regents will announce the school's next prez on Thursday. (link); The 15-member search committee for Harvard's new prez has begun to narrow its focus from the 600+ applicants. (link); Inside HigherEd takes a look at Liberty Prez Falwell's impact on the school, who calls LU "the Fox News of academia." One of the most divisive leaders in higher ed gets a full look. (link)
Also Noticed: In what shouldn't really surprise anyone, Louisville brass say there's no established timeline on hiring a new permanent AD. Remember, we're still a ways from having a new permanent Prez for the Cards. (link); Villanova goes with ANC for all the new digital signage in Finneran Pavilion. (link); Alabama State has changed it's Turkey Day Classic opponent later this month as financial troubles at Cheyney (DII) means Edward Waters (NAIA) will now face the Hornets. (link); No more Washington Nationals-Baltimore Orioles on Navy's campus as the two MLB clubs continue to debate territorial rights. (link); Xavier gets the 2018 Big East Baseball championship hosting duties. (link); Butler gets the green light to serve beer at Hinkle. (link); Northern Kentucky & Braxton Brewing Company, with help from Learfield, create Norse Pale Ale. (link)
Miami (FL) Deputy AD/SWA Jenn Strawley is one of the few females who oversees FB at 'Power 5' institutions & 1.Q co-host @TaiMBrown caught up with Strawley to discuss the hiring process of current Canes FB HC Mark Richt. Checking a box on her path to the chair, Strawley touches on presenting candidates to the search committee, helping Coach Richt with the on-boarding process & more. Listen by clicking the link.
