The end of October and the beginning of November are traditionally times to remember the dead: All Saints Eve (Halloween), All Soul's Day and the Day of the Dead. It seems an especially fitting time to call attention to our national epidemic of gun violence.

In an earlier newsletter we announced The SOUL BOX Project which will culminate in a massive, touring public art installation. By asking people to make small origami Soul Boxes to tally numbers of gun vilolence victims we will bring awareness to the issue and prompt further action.  The Names Project Aids Quilt and the 1000 Cranes Project are examples of community art which helped heal and drove social change. With your help The SOUL BOX Project can do the same.

The Project is growing!

A big thank you to everyone who responded to our initial out-reach for the SOUL BOX Project.  In the weeks since it's inception following the Los Vegas massacre, our studio has hosted box-making, supporters have stopped by with bags of beautiful boxes and opening our PO box is often a heartwarming surprise.

Now there is an easy way for you to share our Project - the soulboxproject.org website! The site is a work in progress but all the information about the Project, how to make and mail boxes and how to donate funds is there.

An important piece yet to come is a page listing organizations who are taking action on gun violence.  We envision the SOUL BOX PROJECT as the Awareness Arm of combating the epidemic of violence, knowing Awareness leads to Actions led by organizations already in place.

How to Participate

This is a national community project!   There are two videos below: The first will touch your heart, the second will show you how to make a box and mail it.

Goal for November

Since this idea was introduced three weeks ago, over one hundred boxes have been delivered. Our goal for November is to double that amount, continuing to double the amount of each previous month for as long as it takes to create a powerful VISUAL STATEMENT - a mind- boggling, heart-wrenching mass of little boxes made by people who stepped up to take action on this issue.
Once thousands of boxes are coming in there will need to be decisions about the Project's statisical parameters and display options, but right now all that's needed are two squares of paper and some time to contemplate lost lives.
These folks play Mah Jongg together. On this evening they made SOUL BOXes first. It's pretty easy to interest an existing group.
You can get out all your art and craft supplies, or make a SOUL BOX at your desk with two pieces of bond paper and a marker.
Thank you for your interest in this project.
Please spread the word. ~ The Soul Box Team
