A Message from Our Vicar

Aloha Family and Friends of Trinity By-the-Sea,

Who are the saints in your life? How has God’s presence and grace shined through them to touch your life?

I ask these questions because, yes, it is the Feast of All Saints followed by All Souls... but also because we are very close to the end of this liturgical year (the first Sunday in December takes us into Advent), a good time to reflect on where we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.

This past year, who have been the saints in your life? How has God’s presence and grace shined through them to touch your life?

St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) wrote these words, which have since been put to music:

Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

For each of us, at different times and in different ways, there are those in our lives (whether they’ve been there all along, or whether it’s a “chance” encounter) who shine Christ’s light. Who lend the hand we need; who walk the long journey with us; who speak a word or see possibility where before there was only uncertainty or fear.

There is so much going on in our world that would distract us. There are so many concerns in each of our lives that would consume us. Even so, for just now, shift your gaze and think about the saints in your life. How has God’s presence and grace shined through them to touch your life?

And now... in whose life are you called to be a saint (even though none of us would describe ourselves this way)? How is Christ calling you to be his hands, his feet, his eyes?

Good and gracious God, make it so. Make it so. Amen.

Blessings,
Bruce+

Know Thy Neighbor
by Anne Kasin
Rosemary Newman
Many of us log miles - getting back and forth to the mainland or to other Hawaiian islands or even to travel further on business or vacation - but I wonder if all of us combined could rival the world miles that Rosemary has covered!
She was born in England and grew up in a 15th century Pub that had a locked passage to the village church next door where she happily sang in the choir. She started school at 41/2 in an all girls convent and eventually studied Speech and Drama in which she received her Masters degree from Trinity College in London. After finishing school she traveled to Hong Kong where she trained in medical skin care and remedial massage and bodywork (as a profession) while (as a poor student) teaching English at a small school and working for British Airways looking after VIPs.
Rosemary then wanted to see "the last place on earth" before returning home to England so she moved to Australia - and stayed for twenty years! She worked for Helena Rubinstein's cosmetic company before opening her own private practice - her skin and remedial massage Clinics were the largest in Australia at that time, she was asked to write the Skin Therapy curriculum for the University of Queensland, and she never went home! Now, hold onto your hat and let her share what happened next!
"Instead of midlife crisis I had a midlife holiday - closed the clinic, found jobs for all the staff and set off alone: to Singapore, Thailand, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and the Middle East and then to London, Russia, East Germany, and Europe! In 1988 I helped drive a truck the length of Africa - that journey took 6 months, sleeping in tents almost all the way!"
Rosemary met her future husband on that last trip - in Zimbabwe at Victoria Falls. She visited him in Portland Oregon, they settled there, and she started another private practice and taught at the nearby Community College and other Institutes. Their first visit to Maui in 1996 inspired her to buy a house and they finally moved to Hawaii in 2007 although Rosemary maintained her mainland practice - commuting every three weeks to Portland to work for 9 days and then return.
Rosemary was very active at Trinity during her residence on Maui - singing in the choir, serving as Lay Reader, Chalice Bearer, and Altar Guild member, and helping with the annual Rummage Sale. When her husband became terminally ill it became difficult to maintain her Maui mindset while she still had responsibilities to her mainland practice. "My time on Maui and at Trinity by the Sea were memorable times and I met many wonderful people, made many friends there, and am thankful to Fr. Austin, Priest in Charge, who visited my husband every time I had to go to work on the mainland." After her husband's death in 2011, Rosemary decided to retire, sold her home, and was offered a teaching job in CHINA! ,
She left Maui and is now " just a nomad " - this summer was her 6th year of teaching English to Chinese college students and, in between summers, she continues to travel! The email sagas of her adventures are absolutely amazing - she especially loves churches, temples, and places of worship and has seen and prayed in many ..... "As long as I can see, walk, and carry my bag, I want to continue travelling around the world!  I love music, food and cooking, travel, and especially friends!" In the last 5 years she has been to Asia, India, Sri Lanka, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Australia, Tibet, and this year she explored Russia via TRANS Siberian, TRANS Manchurian, and TRANS Mongolian railways! Did I mention that she has also traveled by sea - sometimes via cruise ship and sometimes on cargo ships!
This gal enjoys everything and promises that one day she WILL make a permanent home somewhere!  I wonder where that will be!
Help!

I am interested in hearing feedback about the "Know Thy Neighbor" column. Hopefully, you enjoy it and have learned more about those in our diverse congregation! However, if it is going to continue, I need more volunteers who are willing to open a bit of  their lives to me!

I just need some of the facts that you'd like to share - your family, faith, hobbies, talents, interests, careers, pets perhaps - and a picture - I'll write the story and do the rest! Don't use the "I'm not very interesting" excuse - to someone who doesn't know you yet or very well, your story will be unique! Please! Contact me!

Mahalo nui!
