Dear Friends,
This month I have two new reasons to love children's books, both of which arise from living through the recent wildfires in my home community in California. The first reason arose when my niece needed copies of kid's math books (Sir Cumference Math Adventures) to replace what was lost when her entire school burnt down during the fires. Her recognition of the importance of creative books for education touched my heart. (By the way, there is a fund-raising effort to rebuild her charter school; more info is here. )

The second inspiration came when I hurriedly tried to catch up on reading and lost myself in other worlds, first in Harlem (The Vanderbeekers) and then in India (Ahimsa), feeling linked with the joy and sorrows of the world through story. I realized how entering someone else's world, through a well-written book, helps lift us out of our own small cocoon of self-concern.

Thanks for caring about children's literature!
Laura Duggan
