Read - Crisis in Confidence: Academics in Collegiate Athletics
USA Today's Berkowitz writes on a highly unusual clause in Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy's contract, "...if Gundy is fired for insubordination toward his athletics director, currently Mike Holder, he is entitled to a buyout of $500,000 per year or partial year remaining on the agreement." Technical language: "Employee’s failure or refusal to obey a directive from the (Athletics) Director after reasonable opportunity to comply, and/or failure by Employee to maintain communication with Director as may be reasonably necessary to maintain a proper working relationship." University Director of Communications Shutt with a follow-up statement, though it's on Gundy's overall deal & not this specific nugget. A bit more. (link)
Tennessee AD Currie & FB HC Jones deny reports that a FB student-athlete continued playing in last weekend's match-up with Kentucky even though the Vols medical staff knew he had been concussed earlier in the game. Currie points to full autonomy by sports med to clear a student-athlete to return to action, or not, as well as the independent medical observer from the SEC. Jones piggyback's Currie's statement. (link)
How will the MBB-FBI developments impact HC movement during & after this season? That's the question Yahoo's Eisenberg answers by saying the leadership outcomes will show if the NCAA member institutions are serious about the allegations or not. Thesis: "If university administrators black list coaches who have been caught cheating and display unusual patience with coaches who adhere to the rules but struggle to win consistently, it will send the message that win-at-all-costs tactics aren’t necessary to ensure job security." Eisenberg points to Auburn, Arizona & USC, with all three HCs still in place, says early results on this topic "haven't been promising." Wonders if "clean" HCs who could be in make-or-break years, like Clemson's Brownell & Nebraska's Miles, will get more leash as a result of the industry's climate. (link)
Continuing on MBB HCs, the NABC & Kansas HC Self reportedly pushed for those who have operated illegally to turn themselves in. Self is the current NABC Prez, "You’re going to be found out, that’s all we wanted people to understand." The message was delivered on a recent association conference call with "virtually every DI coach on the line." More Self: "We don’t have any different information than from what’s out there. But we just wanted to share what we knew because there’s a lot of noise in the media right now." (link)
Philly.com's Fitzpatrick looks at how Penn State regained it's footing after the Sandusky saga, notes FB's $40M in profit in 2016 & $39M driven to the Nittany Lions Club. Women's Soccer HC Walsh Dambach: "Not only didn’t we lose any kids, recruiting got better. I think the parents really understood that because of what happened and all the changes that resulted, this was going to be the model athletic program." Walsh Dambach also points to former FB HC O'Brien for setting the internal tone. AD Barbour on her biggest challenge upon arrival in Happy Valley, "How during a really difficult time do you make a lot of changes in what had been a positive culture? How to you maintain and protect that?" More. (link)
The Athletic's Fortuna reviews the number of ADs with direct ties to Notre Dame in a piece that arrived in my inbox, but I can't for the life of me find it on The Athletic's website. Regardless, Fortuna points to Drake's hire of Marquette Deputy AD Hardin as the latest example to go along with 15 other DI or DII ADs who are Fighting Irish alums (can you name them?). There's also four additional 'Power 5' bosses who spent time in South Bend: Muir, Barbour, White & Phillips. "The place is unique, to be sure, as you are dealing with a school that is tiny in numbers but broad in reach. There are far more Notre Dame fans than there are alumni. The religious and academic aspects are also different than they are at most schools, and there is that not-so-insignificant fact that the football team is not beholden to a conference. [...] Working near Touchdown Jesus, it seems, has quite the effect."
Reports out of Lafayette indicate Louisiana Softball HC Lotief was dismissed from the program for "violent, vulgar language, and verbal and physical assault." A number of student-athletes spoke to the media on their support of Lotief. Sophomore student-athlete Denham: "Having such a great person being taken out of not only my life but all of my friends’ lives – these are my sisters – it’s like losing a family member." Straight from Lotief: "It's surreal, how unfactual it's been. It's totally untrue." More. (link, link)
SI.com's McMahan chats with former Stanford FB student-athlete Weinacht on the handling of injuries once eligibility is exhausted, "You get a physical on the way in, but there isn’t a physical on the way out. No one asks about your injuries when you leave." Weinacht says he wouldn't trade his student-athlete experience for his current physical ills, wants to address former student-athletes who "get left on an island." North Carolina Center For The Study of Retired Athletes researcher Kerr notes how some departments now have post-eligibility medical care, but wants to see the NCAA address the issue association-wide. (link)
Corporate Corner: Papa John's boss Schnatter continues his critical review of leaders other than himself, after assailing former Louisville AD Jurich some weeks ago, this time Schnatter takes aim at NFL brass for not effectively addressing player protests & therefore impacting his company's bottom line due to decreased sales, which led to an 8.5% stock drop yesterday. This development will be a very interesting one to watch as business leaders connected to sports may now have a crutch to explain poor earning. (link); Of course, the same NFL challenges didn't seem to bother Anheuser-Busch's revenue, which improved 3.6% in Q3. (link); For all its Russian ad hurdles, Facebook recorded the best quarter in company history as the social media monolith continues to gain steam. $10.3B in revenue. (link); Two more Under Armour execs are out, as CMO Donkin and SVP/GM of UA's Women's and Youth Catlett are leaving the company. (link)

The College Football Playoff announced the sites for the national championship from 2021-24. Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium will host in 2021, Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium in 2022, Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park in 2023, and Houston’s NRG Stadium in 2024. CFP Executive Director Hancock: “When we created the playoff, we said we wanted to move the national championship game around. We have done that. We call it 'ten in ten'—ten different communities will have hosted the national championship game in the first ten years of the playoff. The CFP National Championship is one of the most popular sporting events in the United States and we’re proud to bring the game to fans in different regions of the country.” (link)

The announced crowd of 42,822 for the Washington State game was the second-lowest of the season for Arizona, a turnout that AD Heeke doesn't understand: "I’m confused a little bit. I have to say I’m a little disappointed. And I don’t understand exactly why it is what it is. But I’m the new person. I’ve tried to spend a lot of time listening and learning and hearing what people have to say. I’ve spent a lot of time at our games wandering around, seeing how it goes. As we go forward, everything’s on the table. We can’t just sit back and go, 'Oh, it’s this that causes us to struggle in attendance.' We need to look at the whole thing. So we’re going to do that as a staff. I’m going to make sure that we look at everything, from food service to access to in-game entertainment, the way we structure our events. We’re going to look at it all. Saturday in Tucson needs to be about football. We need to fill the stadium for the future of our programs — all of our programs." (link)
Here's the full written transcript of new Nebraska AD Moos' long chat with HuskerOnline. Of note: Calls his transition to Lincoln, during a FB season, pretty abnormal & dislike any of his other AD gigs. Envisions his role in the recruiting process to be, "Anything that the coaches want me to do I've always made myself available. […] I've always felt that they need to hear my vision and my passion from the top and reassurance that there will be stability in these kind of things because these are huge decisions that these young people are making." Continues to be a proponent of satellite FB camps, says the Huskers' overall facility portfolio is the best he's ever seen, even better than Oregon's. (link)
Minnesota boss Coyle pens to the Gopher fan base on why a recent high-profile Men's Hockey matchup at North Dakota wasn't widely available on TV. Indicates the home team has broadcast rights & UND "sold to a network that doesn't provide coverage in many areas of Minnesota. We hoped this broadcast partner would work out deals with providers in Minnesota but, generally speaking, these providers were unable to come to an agreement. [...]  We will always do what we can to have our preferences heard, but we will not always have the final say." (link)
The NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee released its first Top 10 of the season in advance of the official Selection Sunday event scheduled for Nov. 26. 1. Penn State; 2. Nebraska; 3. Minnesota; 4. Stanford; 5. Kentucky; 6. Florida; 7. Texas; 8. Washington; 9. Oregon; and 10. Wisconsin. (link)
It's Personnel: Tennessee's Vol for Life Program Coordinator Davis will step down to pursue "personal business opportunities." (link); Former Florida FB HC & current department Ambassador Spurrier says he has reached out to former Oklahoma FB HC Stoops about the vacant job in Gainesville, but that Stoops has yet to return his call. (link); Oregon FB HC Taggart on the Florida rumors: "Hell, my son even texted me while he was in school. Should have been focusing on class and he asked me, 'Dad, are we moving again?' I'm like 'Are you shi-- are you kidding me?'" (link); Iowa FB HC Ferentz was officially the state's highest paid employee last year, at $5.075M. Hawks AD Barta = 1.18M. (link); Hawkeyes OC Ferentz, on his outburst in the booth last week: "I have sent a letter of apology to the replay official and have assured our head coach and athletic director I will hold myself to a higher level of professionalism." AD Barta calls the incident "resolved." (link); South Dakota AD Herbster parts ways with Women's Soccer HC Green after a 39-94-15 mark in eight seasons. (link); Sacramento State Baseball HC Christiansen is now locked in until 2024 with the Hornets. (link)
The trailer is out for Belmont WBB's documentary, A Season With Belmont Women's Basketball, which will air every other Wednesday of the season after its premier on Nov. 15. New HC Brooks: "We are so excited to share our program with our fans and the rest of the country through this documentary series. I know our players look forward to inviting Bruin fans in for an up-close-and-personal look at all the hard work and behind the scenes fun we share. This is an outstanding group of young ladies in our program, and I'm thrilled that everyone can get a closer look at their work ethic, togetherness and personalities. It promises to generate content that will benefit our program for years to come." The show will be available on the school's official YouTube page. (link)
Hellman: Extraordinary Lockers
Ole Miss AD Bjork provides insights on his FB HC search, "Now it’s all heating up and the market’s shifting. Now it’s just a matter of what programs are going to open up. You study all of that and you anticipate some of those things, and you have to be ready to strike and be ready to go as the season winds down." The NCAA's ruling should be announced soon as this past Tuesday marked eight weeks since COI meetings. "I want to be ready to go as the games wind down on Nov. 25. I want to have a good sense of a direction where we might be going or targets and then see if we can pull the trigger as soon as possible." (link); More on the Rebels as Senior Assoc. AD for Development Carter says only one donor has pulled their pledge since former FB HC Freeze exited. Carter notes the staying power of Ole Miss supporters, expects an uptick once the NCAA ordeal is over & a new FB HC is hired. "We're just kind of on point and ready to do whatever we need to do." (link)
The Tallahassee Democrat’s Culver writes that Florida A&M should continue to carry out the five-year strategic plan that was put in place by departing AD Overton. Longtime FAMU SID Wilson: "Since my time working in FAMU athletics, AD Overton has had the clearest-defined path for success for our department. Every decision he made, he would ask us, 'How will this benefit our student athletes.' He would ride our department hard before a big event, going over details, then spend that same energy commending us when we were successful." AD Overton on his advice for FAMU moving forward: "Trust the process. We’ve got a five-year business strategy laid out. We’ve got a great program in Investing in Champions. You’ve got a plan for success. Trust the process and execute the plan." (link)
San Diego State AD Wicker curious to see how beer & alcohol sales go in Viejas Arena at tonight's MBB exhibition. Expects to see responsible behavior as the Aztecs look to find "middle ground" between the fan experience, a positive financial impact & safety. "We’re excited that we’re adding one more element to the experience that might allow some people to enjoy their game night better. It will be interesting to see who takes advantage of it and how it all plays out." (link)
Big Digs: Tennessee adds "improvements to the south end of the stadium and enhancements of the fan experience" to its wish list for Neyland Stadium, making the renovation projections total $340M. AD Currie presents the plans to the BoT today and if all goes according to plan, the facelift should begin this summer. (link); Shovels will hit the ground in January for Memphis Football's indoor practice facility as the project is now "fully funded" per AD Bowen. Of note, there is a seven-week delay in the construction process because HC Norvell was allowed to "re-design the facility to his liking" after the original plans were drawn up when his predecessor Fuente was still with the Tigers. (link); Next week AD Jacobs and Assoc. VP for Facilities King will present to the Auburn BoT the final $6.3M videoboard plans for the North end zone of Jordan-Hare Stadium, a new equestrian barn, player development facilities for Baseball and Softball, and renovated locker rooms for MBB and WBB. All part of a $61.7M facilities fundraising campaign.(link)
In a profile piece, Baylor Assoc. AD for Engagement Overshown talks about her personal and professional journey that brought her to Waco and her first six months on the job. Overshown, who previously sold real estate, coached cheerleaders at SMU and worked for the University Press at TCU, says her background outside of athletics has helped her in her new role: “I like the fact that I came from the outside to some degree, because I'm not looking through the same lens on everything.” (link)
Also Noticed: The decision whether to play a makeup FB tilt between Florida State and Louisiana Monroe will be decided next week. (link); Cincinnati MBB season tickets are sold out for the first time since 1999-00. The Bearcats are playing their home games at Northern Kentucky's BB&T Arena this season while Fifth Third Arena undergoes an $87M renovation. (link); Daktronics adds 10 new displays for Loyola (Chicago)'s Gentile Arena, including a centerhung. (link); Vermont Men's Soccer student-athletes Alves and Rovira are suspended from the team's regular season finale due to "an eligibility infraction that occurred last January, prior to their enrollment at UVM." (link); Photographer de With figures out that potentially $2.1B worth of iPhones were in the air near Alaska as Apple began shipping out the gadgets for tomorrow's release. (link)
Per notes above on the $340M renovation of Neyland Stadium, Tennessee AD John Currie is pressing forward on a major facility upgrade in Knoxville, a space in which he's expertly qualified given a litany of enhancements during his tenure at Kansas State.
