Sydney fleet captain Mike Tyquin says local Etchells crews climbing towards selection for next year’s class world championship in Brisbane are all too aware that the Milson Silver Goblets regatta marks the time to really knuckle-down in the pre-worlds phase. 'As well as being one of Australia’s largest fleets, the Sydney fleet is one of the most competitive in the country with owners who have recently been on big campaigns with professional crew for the worlds in San Francisco and last month’s Queensland championships' he added.

Post-race beers

Catch up with the fleet at the end of each day's racing - we'll serve hot snacks 'Under the Sail' between the CCA and the lawn and you can get a cold beer from the Careening Cove bar inside.

Presentation dinner Saturday 18 November

This will take place after the Mini A regatta. We will gather 'Under the Sail' from 5pm for drinks and dinner, followed by the presentation of the Silver Goblets.
Cost is $50 per head payable on the night - cash only (no Member accounts). On payment, armbands will be handed out plus a drink ticket.
Family and friends are very welcome to come along.

QLD States report

Held on the magnificent waters of Moreton Bay, on the same track that next year’s World Championship will use, the Brisbane Fleet ran another successful event from their base at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly.

So just how close was it all?

Sydney fleet sailors acquitted themselves extremely well. Commenting on her third overall position, Jeanne-Claude Strong said: 'RQYS put on a great regatta and with 38 entries the competition was pretty fierce. We appreciated the opportunity to spend time on the race track of the world championship next October. We were lucky to have good starts and got to the top mark in the first five boats every race so we were happy with that. Two wins weren’t enough for us to defend our title from last year, but we gave it our best!

'Congratulations to our training partners GT, Mothy and James, with whom we were even on points but ahead on count-back at the start of the last day, and who ended up second overall. Also congratulations to David Clark who came second last year but who won this year. Well sailed!'

The Tale behind the Sail

Kicking off this new series of Sydney Fleet member profiles is is Peter Alexander, aka 'Pierre le Grand', of Tonic AUS1125.

Peter's raced Etchells for 40 years and reckons he's sailed more than 1000 races on Sydney Harbour. Tonic is '12 years young' and was built by Phil J.C. Maloney at Bilpin.
