Hello!

After my successful Open Studio event at the end of last month, it has been all systems go to concentrate on an order for a couple of my bespoke totems.

In 2009 I won the first ever EDIDA (Elle Decoration International Design Awards) Best Craft Designer in South Africa Award for one of these composite pieces.  In 2015 it was featured as part of Elizabeth Leriche’s trend show at Maison et Objet in Paris. My totems are about 2.4m tall and real statement pieces wherever they are used. They are easy to transport and assembled on site, and because I custom make them, I can finish them in colours and surface textures to suit the client’s needs and interior. (Once I even made a blue totem. Wild!)

Technically one totem takes about 30 days of kiln time, compared to a large vessel that requires about 6 days. It is always a bit stressful until all the pieces have gone through the bisque firing, when one can finally check that they all fit together nicely. (Remember, they are hand made…not on a wheel, slip cast or 3D printed, so measurements are never 100% accurate.) All in all the production period per totem is about 10-12 weeks. Worth the wait!

I only make totems to order and the price is $6300/€5400/ZAR86000 per totem from the studio.

I am busy gearing up to do some large format works on paper, using a kimono my sister brought back for me recently from Japan as inspiration, with the working title “ORIENTAL INFLUENCES”.
