There are just 5 weeks left of school for 2017...

From the Desk of David Smith - Senior Deputy Headmaster

There are five weeks of school until the December holidays. Our boys need to make every one of these academic and examination days count. These five weeks will largely determine your son’s academic results for the year and indeed, lay the academic platform for 2018. Success is about discipline and daily focusing on habits that will lead to success. Many of our summer sports are winding up and many individuals and teams have excelled in the various sporting codes. There is no doubt that many boys have gone the extra mile in preparing for their particular sport. They invariably would have done something extra, on a daily basis, resulting in their successes. Certainly, discipline would have been a key feature in their preparation. As the College turns its focus to examinations I want to remind the boys and the parents that a solid routine at home is essential to reach academic potential. For me, the boys have to commit to their studies, try and give of their best. The worst kind of defeat is not failure: it’s the decision not to work hard, and not to try.

The Inanda Hoops Classic Challenge by Elvis Ukpong

From October 19-22, St David’s hosted its inaugural basketball tournament dubbed “Inanda Hoops Classic Challenge” this event brought together some of the best basketball schools from across the province including a special appearance by the Royal Bafokeng Sports all the way from Rustenburg, North West. It was a great 4 days of intense basketball competition played in great spirit and camaraderie with a lot of the games going down to the wire. The tournament was specifically structured to offer a friendly, developmental/educational, and competitive environment for all participants to play, learn and grow. With FIBA rules governing all games, all matches were played to a stop-start with the 24 seconds shot clock being used, game stats were collected for team analysis. After defeating St Benedict’s College in the final match, Michael Mount Waldorf School emerged as the 2017 Inanda Hoops Classic Challenge champions thereby clinching the coveted trophy.
The final rankings were as follows:
  1.  Michael Mount Waldorf School
  2.  St Benedict’s College
  3.  St Stithians College
  4. St John’s College
  5.  Jeppe High School for Boys
  6. St David’s Marist Inanda
  7. Germiston High School
  8. Royal Bafokeng Sports
  9. King Edward VII School
  10. Sacred Heart College
  11. Redhill School
  12. Bishop Bavin School

Our very own Basketball Captain Simbainashe Kanyangarara was voted as a member of the All-Star team, while Karabo Maepa competed in the Skills Challenge and finished in the 3rd place.
Water Polo by Dean Whyte

During the mid-term break two St David’s water polo teams took to the pool to compete in the 1st team St Stithians stayers water polo tournament and the U15 Crawford Cup of Honour.
The stayers’ tournament always proves a difficult tournament with new combinations and teams coming to the fore. Our first team boys had a very mixed set of results with several narrow wins and losses. The 1st team boys finished 12th in a pool of 20 teams.
The Cup of Honour, celebrated the men’s water polo captain – Pierre Le Roux, with our U15’s with their eyes on the gold. The U15s came out the blocks firing at all cylinders. With some very convincing wins in the early stages of the tournament.
The team met St Johns College in the semi-finals - after rain delaying the middle of the game and being paused to the next morning. The boys unfortunately lost that game to the eventual winners of the tournament. The U15s placed 3rd at this tournament.
Well done to all the boys who participated and gave their all. Thank you to the parents, coaches and managers for all your time and efforts into the past week.

Grade 2 Outing Info

With great excitement the Grade Two’s embarked on their first field trip of the year. This much anticipated bus trip took place just before Mid-Term on Wednesday 18th October. The underlying theme for the outing was Transport, however, it also needed to be a venue that would appeal to “our 8 year old Boys”. We were not disappointed! From the picnic venue, the numerous fighter planes, huge tanks that would make facing the JHB traffic so easy and the many stories the Boys could not wait to share with our guide -  fun was had by all.

JP Swimming Gala

On Thursday 19 October 2017, our JP St David’s boys had some exciting fun in the sun down at the pool.
Not only were all the houses represented beautifully, the teachers were dressed up in Hawaiian theme complements of Mrs. Smith. Throughout the morning, there was a wonderful cheerful roar that emanated from the stands. From the boys, to parents, to grandparents and to siblings, this event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Congratulations to Daneel Bester for breaking the record for the U/7 A Freestyle race, as well as, to Benedict for breaking a record in the U/8 A Freestyle Relay race.

The overall winners of the JP Inter-house gala were Benedict. Congratulations on a fantastic win, boys!

Results:

Benedict: 171 points

College: 162 points

Osmond: 145 points

The Bishops: 100 points

Race 10 of the 2017 race series

Emmarentia Dam – 14.10.2017

The Prep school canoeing team had a very successful GCU School League race at Emmarentia dam.

It was a unique event in that it was held late afternoon.

The St Davids Marist Inanda PTA had very kindly donated neon stripes, from NITE FEVER, and with a field of 80 paddlers from across Gauteng, wearing neon stripe head bands it looked super cool.

We had a team of 19 Prep school boys and 2 Mini Marist boys who raced a long distance course, depending on their age, in windy conditions. Each boy did their school proud and earned valuable points for St Davids in the GCU School League. The team came away with eight medals.

Afrihost St David’s Prep Cricket Festival

The Afrihost St David’s Prep Cricket Festival for U 12 boys was played over the mid-term break.  It involved 8 schools, four local schools, St David’s, Montrose, St Stithian’s and St Peter’s and four out of town schools.  The visitors to Johannesburg were Hellenic from Zimbabwe, Somerset College from Somerset West, Clifton Nottingham Road and Uplands from White River.

The Festival format was a good test of the boy’s skills and endurance, with two 50 over games and then a concluding T20 on the Sunday.  The feedback from the Festival has been enormously positive and old bonds were strengthened and new friends made and our school and the people in it were successfully showcased.

Luke Watt the St David’s opening batsman excelled and his efforts were recognised as received the Batsman of the Festival award.  Tiago Kostov also stood out with some useful batting and the ever reliable Brandon Archer was yet again the best of the St David’s bowlers.

On 28 October 1816, three months after his ordination, Marcellin Champagnat was called to the
Montagne home in Les Palais, about 6kms from La Valla, where 16 year-old Jean-Baptiste Montagne was dying. As Marcellin prepared to hear the confession of Jean-Baptiste, he realised that the young man had little religious or academic education. It occurred to Marcellin that Jean-Baptiste was one of many young people affected by a lack of education during and after the French Revolution. It was this incident that further inspired the young Marcellin Champagne to start a teaching Order, namely ‘The Marist Brothers’ and which has resulted in a Marist footprint today in 81 countries, educating over
654 000 children and young people.

Next Friday 27 October 2017 St David’s Marist Inanda will celebrate Montagne Day, with this year being the 201st Anniversary of the date on which St Marcellin Champagnat visited the dying Jean-Baptiste Montagne.  Montagne Day will mark the closing of the formal celebrations of the 200 Years of Marist Education Bicentenary and the 150th year of Marist education in South Africa.

In remembrance of this significant event in Marist history, all St David’s boys will be encouraged to continue the legacy of St Marcellin by once again this year pledging to act in a manner that reflects the Marist values. To this end, each boy will receive a Pledge Form during their tutor period or RE lesson before Montagne Day on which they can commit to specific behaviours that they feel they would like to uphold. These pledges will be brought to the Altar, as part of the Offertory Procession, at the combined Montagne Day Mass on Friday 27 October.

As part of this pledge, and in the spirit of the Marist value of ‘Love of Work’, we would like to encourage each boy to commit to raising, through their own efforts or acts of service, R100 to contribute to the St David’s Marist Foundation Father Bernard Brewer Bursary Fund. These donations will form part of each year group’s own Circle of Friendship as per the Matric Years that they will eventually become, for example, those boys currently in Grade 6 this year will be the Matric Class of 2023 Circle.  The funds brought in by the boys will go towards giving the gift of a Marist education to a boy who may be a modern-day Montagne, in honour and remembrance of the young Jean-Baptiste Montagne and the opportunities he did not have. A portion of the donation will also go to the ‘Hands of Champagnat’ Grade 11 service portfolio committee for their 2017/18 community project.

In the interests of safety, we would prefer that the boys not carry cash to school and ask that you indicate your consent to us adding this once-off donation of R100 (or any amount you would like to gift to the School for Montagne Day) to your fee account, or that you make an EFT to the St David’s Marist Foundation account (bank details below), with the reference being your family surname + M Day. Please click here to give your consent to have R100 added to your fee account (either per son, or as a family contribution).

REFLECTION

PRAYER FOR BROTHERHOOD:

Father, you have made us. Red, yellow, brown, white and black, tall and short, fat and thin, rich and poor, young and old – all are your children.  Teach us to cooperate rather than to compete, to respect rather than to revile, to forgive rather than condemn.  Your Son turned from no one.  May we learn, like him, to be open to share of the divine that you implanted in each of your sons and daughters.  And may we forge a bond of love that will make living a reality the brotherhood in which we profess to believe.  AMEN.

Fr Teboho Matseke
