Bingley Town Council mailing no. 14

In this month’s mailing, we have news of a further batch of grants awarded to community groups in Bingley. The funds will be put towards projects ranging from a Bingley Parkrun to a feasibility study for the refurbishment of an arts facility and a cycling group focusing on women’s wellbeing.

The next stage of the development of our Neighbourhood Plan is a meeting being held on 21st November, and we have details below of how you can get involved if you have not already expressed an interest.

If you were out and about in town last Thursday or Saturday, you may have seen groups of volunteers on their hands and knees planting bulbs! All in a good cause, and you can see pictures of many of the culprits below.

Best wishes,

Ros Dawson

Chair, Bingley Town Council

Grants

Grants were awarded to five local community groups at the meeting of the Finance and General Purposes Committee on 11 October, with the total amount awarded amounting to £5,369.

Bingley Amateur Operatic Society were awarded £2,000 to fund a feasibility study in respect of their building in central Bingley. This will enable the group to apply for a grant from the Arts Council National Lottery fund to renovate the building.

Gilstead Village Society is to receive £500 towards the cost of a defibrillator, which will be installed at St Wilfrid’s Church Hall in Gilstead, and a sum of £369 was awarded to Cottingley Community Association for the purchase of Christmas lights to enhance their existing displays.

Parkrun was granted £2,000 to fund the timing equipment and results processing system needed to run a free, regular Saturday-morning Parkrun event in Myrtle Park, Bingley. The amount is conditional on the group obtaining the necessary remaining funding from other sources. And continuing the health and fitness theme, a grant of £500 was awarded to Bingley Belles towards the start-up costs for this women’s cycling group.

Winter planting

Two spring bulb-planting sessions were held in Bingley on 19 and 21 October. The earlier session was instigated by Bingley Airedale Rotary Club, whose members turned out in force to plant crocuses on part of Quaker Hill, off Chapel Lane. The purple crocuses that will hopefully appear on the site in spring are being planted to raise the profile of Rotary's worldwide objective to eradicate polio. This is a huge and ongoing project working alongside the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and eradication is anticipated in the next 3 or 4 years. Purple has been chosen because it is the colour of the dye used to identify children who have been vaccinated against the polio virus.

More crocuses and some daffodils were also planted on Saturday 21st by a small group of volunteers for the Town Council, on the banking at the junction of Ferncliffe Road and the slip road down to the A650 (Skipton-bound).

The barrier baskets and tubs in central Bingley have now been planted up with winter plants by Carlton Nurseries. Bulbs have also been distributed to local groups (Action Stations, Bingley WI, Cottingley Community Association, Friends of Prince of Wales Park, Jerr Wood Action Group, Manorfield Community Gardens and the Myrtle Park group) and village societies in Cottingley, Crossflatts, Eldwick, Gilstead and Micklethwaite to plant in their own  areas.  So we can all look forward to seeing a little bit of extra colour in the spring, along with the added bonus of polyanthus and bellis bedding plants purchased from Bradford Council at a discount.

Neighbourhood Plan meeting, Tuesday 21 November

We are pleased to report that a number of residents have been in touch to express an interest in getting involved in producing Bingley’s Neighbourhood Plan. When completed, the Neighbourhood Plan will form part of Bradford Council’s Local Plan, giving us the opportunity to say what type of development (commercial and housing) we want in our parish and where it should be sited. It will also entitle us to 25% of any Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) on new development.

The Council is holding an event for interested parties entitled ‘Developing a Neighbourhood Plan for Bingley’ on Tuesday 21 November from 6.30pm until 8pm, at Church House in Bingley. This will provide some more information about what is involved in preparing a Neighbourhood Plan and the types of policies that will be included. It will also provide an opportunity to begin to identify themes and issues that are important to Bingley, and to meet others who want to be part of the team.

At the event we will be asking attendees to complete a form to indicate the level of involvement they wish to have and to detail the relevant skills and experiences they could contribute to the project. After the meeting, Bingley Town Council’s Planning Committee will appoint members to the Neighbourhood Plan working group. There will be opportunities for everyone who wants to be involved. However, there are restrictions on the number of members the Working Group can have, so the Town Council will also be looking for members of a wider Neighbourhood Plan team.

To register your interest, and for details of some initial reading, please email enquiries@bingleytowncouncil.gov.uk
