New Resource for Investigators: CTSI Patient Advisory Council for Research

The CTSI has a newly formed Patient Advisory Council for Research. Facilitated by the Recruitment and Retention Unit, the council consists of 16 patients from NYU Langone Health who will be attending meetings every other month to give feedback on research ideas, acceptability and feasibility of studies from a patient perspective, and how best to advertise studies. Council members were randomly selected from Epic and invited to join the council via the MyChart portal. All council members were individually screened via a telephone interview, and then participated in a group interview and mock study. Council members vary by age, race, gender and health conditions; they are also reimbursed for their time and travel.
This newly formed council may be particularly helpful in providing feedback and patient voices on research projects that are in early planning stages. All meetings of the Patient Advisory Council for Research will be held on a Wednesday from 5-7pm at TRB. Study teams will need to be available during this time if they would like to utilize the Patient Advisory Council for Research.

Third Annual Health Disparities Day Symposium

The NYU-H+H CTSI, in collaboration with the Department of Population Health and Office of Diversity Affairs, hosted NYU Langone Health’s Third Annual Health Disparities Day Symposium on October 12, 2017. The event was attended by 256 individuals, including faculty, staff, students, health providers, community health workers, and representatives from community-based organizations, health care facilities, and the NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene.
Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, provided the morning keynote address, setting the tone for the day on the theme of “Pursuing Health Equity in an Uncertain Time”. The keynote was followed by four “mini-talks” focused on the topics of the criminal justice system, immigrant healthcare access, transgender healthcare, and community organizing. The talks were followed by a poster session during which 25 posters on a wide range of health disparities topics were presented. Sonia Angell, MD, MPH of the NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, provided an afternoon keynote address in which she presented an overview of health disparities in NYC, and how the Health Department is working to address them. Next, during the Controversies in Population Health Panel, leaders from hospital systems across the city compared how the shifting political climate affects their institutions. The day ended with the presentation of two awards to the following individuals for their excellent poster presentations - Student category: Rebecca Robbins, PhD, MS; Staff category: Patricio Castillo.
