#10: The Omaha World Herald's Shatel snagged some time with Moos, who emphasized that he was not brought in with orders to make a change at the FB HC position: "At Nebraska we have a passionate fan base. And I will listen. But I have to assess it myself. I’ll be at Purdue this weekend. I’ll be talking to Mike the next few weeks, get down to see his coaches. He’s my coach right now and I’m going to support him. Hopefully we win out." Won't specify a set number of Ws that will keep Riley in Lincoln. Bit more on his relationship with Nike co-founder Knight, his loyalty to Washington State FB HC Leach, his dream of getting to a Rose Bowl, and his "NBT" (no bowl tickets) list of complainers/haters. (link)
#9: Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim with an interesting comment on the latest MBB developments, "There's always been underlying thoughts that something was happening here or there. [...] It doesn't happen with Nike. Nike has about 80 schools. The guys we're recruiting, we're recruiting against three or four Nike schools most of the time. (Nike) isn't going to help one of those schools. [...] Summer basketball probably will go out." (link)
#8: #CALS17: Longtime search lead & consultant Carr presented his I.C.E. framework in Norman Monday, the ingredients he thinks are necessary to thrive in college athletics. Integrity, Curiosity, Energy. "The demand and search for such effective leaders are a constant and universal quest.  As you achieve today and build for your future, I encourage you to measure and enhance the level of 'Ice in your veins'. I can guarantee that your personal and professional return on investment will be extraordinary." (link); Rice AD Karlgaard: "You can't claim to be about the student-athlete experience without asking student-athletes about their experience." (link); SMU AD Hart: "1. Protect the Institution 2. Protect the program 3. Protect the individual...in that order." (link); TCU jeans-wearer Del Conte: "Be humble, serve others, be honest." (link); More (link)
#7: Williams to Virginia: Cavaliers Prez-elect Ryan's take, "I think Carla is spectacular. She is exceedingly well-prepared for this role, but more than that, she is fiercely committed to excellence in both athletics and academics and has a track record of success in both arenas." Georgia Prez Morehead: "I have had the pleasure of working for many years with Carla Williams as president, provost and faculty athletics representative. She is an outstanding athletic administrator and importantly a wonderful role model for our student-athletes. I know she will be a superb athletic director for the University of Virginia." (link); Williams: "There are so many reasons why it's attractive. There are great coaches here who are great people who really support the mission of education through sports participation, and that's all very important to me. [...] I never sat around and mapped out how I was going to be an athletic director, but I know subconsciously I wanted to be prepared for the opportunity. I paid attention to everybody, but especially people in leadership positions. I always wanted to be as good a leader as I could be, so I always paid attention to people in leadership positions, whether that was a head coach or senior associate athletic director or athletic director or president or provost. I've always been very observant and always willing to learn." Former Georgia & current Miami (FL) FB HC Richt calls the hire of Williams a "home run." (link); More via an intro video put together by UVA.(link); USA Today's Wolken: "Nice run of schools lately hiring women for AD jobs and there are several No. 2s in line to move up." (link)
#6: Ohio State's all grey unis for this weekend's tilt with Penn Statereportedly went all the way up through Buckeyes boss Smith as the Nittany Lions were pushing back on grey numbers against grey jerseys. (link)
#5: USA Today releases its annual FB HC compensation survey:
+ This year's Top 10: Alabama's Saban ($11.132M), Clemson's Swinney ($8.504M), Michigan's Harbaugh ($7.004M), Ohio State's Meyer ($6.431M), Arizona's Rodriguez ($5.631M), Florida State's Fisher ($5.7M), Stanford's Shaw (5.680M), Texas' Herman ($5.486M), TCU's Patterson ($5.104M) & Texas A&M's Sumlin ($5.0M) After this season is over, there will be 26 HCs with a buyout of $10M or more. Lots, lots more in the data. (link)
+ USA Today headliners Berkowitz, Brady & Schnaars wonder if Crimson Tide boss Saban is underpaid at $11M, notes he made $3.5M in 2007, his first in Tuscaloosa. Straight-forward from Bama AD Byrne: "He's separated himself from the market." Former Prez Witt says Saban's impact on the university is most certainly a driver of enhanced enrollment (up from 23K in 2006 to 38K this year) & caliber of students, "I think offering Coach Saban a compensation package that addresses all of his interests is in the best interest of the university. Whether that is his house, car, whatever." Current boss Bell: "He's worth absolutely every single penny." More. (link)
+ Nine quirks in this year's review include Utah HC Whittingham's grandchildren & great grandchildren with 50% off tuition at the university. Purdue's Brohm has a bonus tied directly to his recruiting rankings. Fresno State boss Tedford could make $2.35M in bonuses this year. Coastal Carolina's Moglia has control of literally every element in & around his program, including music during practice. Kentucky's Stoops gets $250K for every win of seven wins or more. (link)
+ If you were surprised to see Rodriguez in the Top 10, the explanation is tied to incentives of his Western Refining Logistics LP shares that vest over time. It's complicated. (link)
#4: Why did ESPN do the deal in the first place? The pact with Barstool is over after one episode. Puzzling. (link)
MANDTVR: Recruitment in Virtual Reality
#3: Check out how the Washington Wizards have reimagined the squad's roster on the team's website. A stark departure from the standard chart & bio info & arguably much more engaging. (link)
#2: Louisville: The university released its termination letter sent to former AD Jurich & it's a doozy. Interim Prez Postel accused Jurich of doing shady deals that improved his own financial standing alongside former Prez Ramsey, points to "ineffective management, divisive leadership, unprofessional conduct, and a lack of collegiality best characterized as intimidation and bullying that extends from student government to the University's senior leadership," plus a lack of supervision of HCs. Jurich's legal team counters, calls it a "character assassination," will fight "vigorously" to defend their client. Full letter included in linked article. (link); Acting Cards boss Tyra was back at the podium Tuesday, says he has fully reviewed the Adidas deal & found no major question marks. Expects the two parties to continue working together. The university is still reviewing the agreement. (link); One more nugget as the Cards will use $8M to build their new TV production center as part of the ACC Network linear buildout. (link)
#1: Historic news as the Daily Press' Teel indicates Virginia is set to name Georgia Deputy AD Williams as the new boss in Charlottesville, a move that would make Williams the first African-American female to lead a 'Power 5' brand. Teel: "Williams and other finalists then met in Boston earlier this month with incoming U.Va. president James Ryan, the dean of Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. [Outgoing Prez] Sullivan called the finalists other than Williams on Saturday to inform them Virginia was moving in a different direction." (link); SEC Country's Emerson wonders what the move means for UGA with Williams serving for a number of years as a close confidant of Bulldogs AD McGarity's. In addition to her sport facilitator responsibilities for FB, "At meetings of the UGA athletics board, she usually would sit next to McGarity." (link)
