D1.jobs: New opportunity below at UNLV. Post your team opportunities where thousands of administrators start their mornings. Upload a job here.
Three individuals wrapped up in the recent MBB developments are apparently starting to talk. Agency go-between Dawkins, AAU coach Augustine & financial adviser Sood "have been engaged in, and are continuing, discussions concerning a possible disposition of these cases." More from the LA Times: "It is further found that the Government has requested a continuance of 14 days to engage in further discussions with defense counsel about the disposition of these cases and that the defendant, through counsel, has consented that such a continuance may be granted." (link)
The Athletic's Olson rounds up thoughts from a number of executive leaders on the coming early FB signing period. Big 12 Commish Bowlsby: "I suspect there will be a large number that would like to get their recruitment over before the holidays and be able to move on." Baylor HC Rhule: "If they don’t sign, it doesn’t mean they’re not with you, but it means they’re still open. At least it brings reality where both the player and the school know exactly where they stand." MAC boss Steinbrecher, who chaired the group that implemented the change, "You’ve got to let it breathe a little bit and let it play out. Do people behave in a manner you anticipated? What are the real and unintended consequences? We’ll see." A bit more, including those who aren't in favor. (link)
This season is Arkansas AD Long's fourth & final as part of the College FB Playoff committee. CFP Executive Director Hancock continues to say Long was the perfect initial chair for the group, "He implemented some procedures and policies that we will have in place for the next 20 years." Long recounts stress related to his time in front of the camera, "I'm not wired for TV." Overall: "It’s a role where you need to be cautious. You need to represent things the right way because you’re not representing your personal view. You’re representing the consolidation of 13 other people’s’ views in that room. When you’re thinking and answering the question, your human reaction is to answer how you think. It’s probably one of the most difficult things I’ll ever do." Current chair & Texas Tech AD Hocutt agrees with Hancock that Long set a sound example & "set a high bar." (link)
Clemson gets a $2.5M commitment from the Glenns that's unrestricted & will go toward athletic facility enhancements, "student development operations" & academics. Ninth Cornerstone Gift for the Tigers. Brings the family's total giving to the university to $8M+. Gerald Glenn made his name as a leader of international engineering firms. (link)
"Several" Air Force Men's LAX coaches & student-athletes have been suspended in connection to an investigation into reports of hazing, bullying, abusive sexual contact & drug use. When asked for more details, AFA Deputy Director of Public Affairs Chism declined to provide any further information, called the probe "on going." (link)
ADs Talkin' HCs: Oregon State FB student-athletes are pushing to have Interim FB HC Hall installed as the permanent leader of the Beavers. AD Barnes says it shows Hall is the right guy at the right time, but stops short of committing to interviewing Hall for the gig. Additionally, Barnes notes that the contract he's inked with DHR won't end up anywhere close to the $200K consulting cap. DHR's Sugiyama was on campus twice this past week. (link); Old Dominion AD Selig believes FB is still on track despite a current 2-5 mark under longtime HC Wilder. Selig: "If you look through the history of schools that have moved up, there’s a yo-yo effect when you transition up. It’s not a straight, smooth trajectory to success." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
It'll be well into Saturday evening before Ohio State & Penn State kick from Columbus for those watching from London. Make no mistake, there will be plenty of Bucks fans tuning in at Belushi's near London Bridge. OSU alum & organizer Horne: "You can watch some of these games at home if you have the right (television packages). But everyone likes coming together for big games. I think the national championship game (in 2015) kicked off around 1:30 a.m." (link); Alibaba boss Tsai has reportedly purchased 49% of the Brooklyn Nets for around $1.125B. (link)

The DI Board of Directors & the DI Presidential Forum both met this week to work on five-year strategic goals for the association. "Members will be surveyed, and the board will review their responses at its January meeting." Next April for finalization of the plan. Board chair & Minnesota Prez Kaler: "We need input from the rest of the division to make sure we all share both ownership of and a commitment to the strategic agenda." (link); More from Indy as the board committed an additional $12.5M for concussion & head injury study, plus a push-along to the DI Council for alcohol sales at some championships no earlier than 2018-19. (link)
CBSSports.com's Parrish questions NCAA decisions on MBB student-athletes at Oakland & Colorado. For the Golden Grizzlies, senior standout Hayes is out for four games after slipping below university standards in his major of study, while still on pace to graduate at then end of this semester. In Boulder, frosh Battey will sit for the season after taking five years to complete high school even though it sounds legit on his holdback. Buffs HC Boyle with sharp words, "Evan Battey gets punished and North Carolina gets off scot-free. I'm not sure where the justice is in that. That's for other people to decide. But I'm extremely disappointed." (link)
The NCAA is investigating a potential inappropriate relationship between BYU MBB student-athlete Emery & a donor that may have included travel to concerts & an amusement park via the use of a new car. The vehicle Emery has been driving is registered to a Fun For Less Tours, which is owned by a Cougar Club member. BYU has a law firm to assist in the matter. (link)
The News & Observer's DeCock points to Hockey's model of drafting 18 year-olds who can then make the decision to turn pro at anytime as a solution to the one-and-done obstacle course of MBB. DeCock: "So a player like Harry Giles might have been the first or second overall pick in his age group at 18. He would have the option to turn pro immediately. Or, because of his injury issues, he could stay at Duke as long as he needs to be prepared for the NBA. Which means he’d probably be playing at Duke this season." Blue Devils boss Krzyzewski: "We should investigate all of that. We should come up with our own damn model. We should do it now. What are we waiting for?" (link)
Interesting read on the MBB exhibition between Michigan State & Georgia in Grand Rapids tomorrow in Grand Rapids that came together in all of six days. The connection? Bulldogs Director of Operations Bucklin is the nephew of Spartans HC Izzo. MSU Director of Facilities & Event Operations Carter on the tight planning window, "I'm thinking, 'Oh my god, this is just crazy." Semi trailers from Meijer to transport a playing floor & baskets, no day-before shoot arounds, a lack of normal game luxuries are all part of the story as Van Andel Arena plays host. (link)
WSJ's Reagan & Schwartzel are the latest to take a look at Endeavor's IMG Academy in Bradenton. IMG's $75.2K annual tuition tops the list against other premium prep options & "As many as 30 members of the current team are expected to get Division I scholarships, including from top programs Alabama, Ohio State and Florida State. [...] Recruiting experts say no other high-school team is likely to produce even 20 scholarship players." The mother of one FB student-athlete, "Who would send their kid to a regular high-school drama course if they had the opportunity to go to Juilliard?" More, including a look at the daily schedule of student-athletes. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
NYT's Tracy: "How the Big Ten Got Back to the Top of College Football." Wisconsin AD Alvarez: "The influx of new, very strong coaches coming into the league, some emphasizing recruiting and in some cases national recruiting, made everyone in the league pick up their game." Alvarez also believes stability within the HCs ranks around the league is also a key part of the narrative, recounts an SEC HC telling him, "This is tough. One loss, and they’re about ready to run someone out of town." Tracy suggests the B1G shouldn't buy his own headline & continue to operate with a chip on its collective shoulder. (link)
More BYU as the Salt Lake Tribune's Drew analyzes the downturn on the gridiron for the Cougars, points to the decision to go independent & the front-loading of premium opponents on the schedule. Drew also believes the current staff has missed on recruiting objectives & on-field adjustments. More: "Above Holmoe, BYU’s administrators and the folks on the board of trustees who really govern the school seem to place more value on facilities than people. The trustees want athletics to thrive and be successful, but it doesn’t appear to be a priority. And they haven’t been willing to pay for it." (link)
In terms of "willing to pay for it," Fresno State constructed the contract for first-year FB HC Tedford to heavily reward a successful competitive slate & the Bulldogs are on the way to doing just that. AD Bartko: "You always want to have success and pay those bonuses. […] Our fans have had three or four years of tough going. They’re coming back. They’re donating. But we lost a lot the last couple of years. Jeff has done a great job of reinstalling success and the emotion and I think our fans are going to get behind it. We’re third right now in the league in average attendance, but we want to be first and we can do it." Full menu of bonuses for Tedford reviewed in the piece, including seven wins earning him another $150K, eight = $200K, nine = 250K & ten = $300K. Fresno is 5-2 (4-0) & hosts UNLV today. (link)
Another piece on Wichita State's move to the AAC that comes with a brighter national spotlight. Most of the article has been covered, but check out these quotes from HC Marshall, "I don't know if me complaining about it and being real and telling the truth bothers them -- them being the selection committee. I don't know if it's just a lack of respect for the conference we were in [the Missouri Valley Conference]. I don't know if, honestly, they just don't really want non-Power 5 teams in the tournament ... because every year it seems to be less and less, and then they put them together, like us playing Dayton." Also, on people who question if Wichita is a destination job, "Come see what we've got going. Come see the type of young people that I get to coach every single day. I'm not dealing with handlers. I'm not dealing with the street agents. I'm dealing with dudes that want to do it right." More. (link)
I think there are some solid takeaways in this ESPN read on how NFL owners & leadership are handling player protests, but more than anything it's worth your time from a power dynamics at play. Specifically, as a select group of owners were meeting with NFLPA reps a few weeks ago, the seating of all parties around a conference table ended up being a major decision & one that could dictate the tone of the meeting. The influence of Dallas Cowboys owner Jones is also explored as the longest tenured active owner in the league. (link)
Also Noticed: Michigan State FB's charter air options didn't work out & the Spartans ended up busing 230+ miles to Northwestern for today's game. (link); Tulane & Teamworks expand their relationship to now include the entire department. (link); How much do bye weeks matter? Lots of variables involved, but so far this season FBS squads are 41-44 the week after getting some rest. (link); FOX will test nine six-second commercials during games on Thanksgiving against in-game content. (link); Total streams for Amazon through four NFL games = 7.1M across 187 countries & territories.
