THE SCOUT STAFF
By Fernan Vargas
The walking staff is a staple of the Scout lifestyle.  The walking stick is a utilitarian tool that can be used for a number of purposes. Such as, measuring distances, beating out brush fires, and many others.  As a weapon the use of the staff is ancient and eternal spanning cultures around the world.  It is often referred to as the king of weapons.  The Japanese Bo, the Chinese Gun and the English Quarter Staff are just a few popular examples of staff weapons.  The staff in its various incarnations has drawn the attention of the fighting masters.  Comprehensive and sophisticated methods for its use have been developed in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
Presented here is an introduction to a simplified method for the use of the walking stick or “Scout Staff”.  The Warrior Scout should be familiar with a variety of personal protection weapons and the staff is the first and arguably the most important.
Unlike the Knife or tomahawk, which are designed enact lethal force, the Scout Staff can be progressive in its application of force.  The scout staff can be easily used in a non lethal manner, but can be applied with lethal force if necessary.
The introductory techniques presented here should be viewed as “Survival Fundamentals”.  While they can easily be built upon, expanding the Scout’s knowledge and repertoire they are serviceable on their own with diligent practice.
HORIZONTAL SWORD STRIKE
To execute the horizontal sword strike, the scout will slide one hand down the shaft of the staff while releasing and re-griping the staff like a sword.  The scout will then swing the staff horizontally towards the target.  The scout will focus on sing the last six inches of the staff as a striking surface.

DOWNWARD SMASH
To execute the Downward smash the Scout assumes the two handed guard. The Scout will hold the walking stick above the desired target and then rapidly lift upwards, moving at the elbow and shoulder to strike the target with the middle shaft of the walking stick.

KNIFE COMBAT TECHNIQUES

The Scout will find in the Combat Series two basic training sets to answer the most common angles of attack.   One illustrates the use of the forward grip and the other the use of the reverse grip.  The Combat Series represents the crucial core defensive tactics that every student of the system should know for both their protection and their advancement in the system.  While the series offers the Scout reliable, functional answers to common problems their true value lies in their ability to train several skills simultaneously.

SERIES ONE: ANGLE ONE DEFENSE

As the enemy attacks the Scout will block the incoming attack with their blade.  The Scout will then check and grab the enemy’s arm with their live hand.  The Scout will then clear their blade.  A cut to the enemy’s arm can be executed if desired.  The Scout will finish the sequence by thrusting at the enemy’s center line.

SURVIVAL SKILLS
By Benjamin Raven Pressley
Fire is not only needed for warmth but is also needed for purifying water, cooking, manufacture of tools and just the calming effect a fire has is not to be underestimated in importance. It is also, usually, a good deterrent to most animals. If you have flint and steel, and know how to use them or a magnesium fire starter, you are way ahead. There are also some magnesium devices that you just press down into a tinder bundle with enough force to scrape steel against magnesium making a shower of sparks that pretty much cause instantaneous combustion, all conditions being right. I love these devices because they can be submerged under water and still dripping and still make a shower of sparks hot enough to ignite a dry tinder bundle.
If you are a hunter and still have a shotgun with you when lost, carefully break the end off a shell and remove any shot all the way down to the powder. Place this cartridge in the rifle/shotgun chamber. Stuff the barrel with a dry cotton rag loosely and fire the gun into the air. It may take several attempts with the same piece of material, but on a successful attempt it should come down flaming. This works well with a flintlock rifle also and there is no shell to break down. Incidentally, have tinder and kindling ready to receive your ember before producing an ember with any method. I have seen many fires go out because tinder was not already on hand and the ember went out while the person frantically searched for some tinder to keep it going. You may only have one chance if you get an ember. I very often won’t even teach a firemaking class till I am sure my students can produce a fire and keep it going with only one match.
If you have a survival kit you may want to include a piece of steel wool. A piece of steel wool rubbed across both poles of a battery from a flashlight or even a cell phone will heat up and flame up enough to light a tinder bundle.
There are also some chemicals such as foot powder and ear drops that will spontaneously combust when rubbed into a cotton ball. Another chemical combination is chlorine powder and brake fluid. My favorite is potassium permanganate and glycerine. Potassium permanganate also double as a water purifier. Just look for it any hardware store in the water filter chemicals section.
A parabolic lens can be used to concentrate the sun’s rays enough to ignite tinder. A magnifying glass or even eye glasses used properly can also focus the sun’s rays enough to ignite tinder. I even saw someone shape a piece of ice once and use it to like a lens to start a fire!
That being said, these are a few modern matchless fire making methods. As I said earlier I want the main emphasis of this book to focus on survival with what you can acquire from nature. The bow drill and hand drill are the easiest friction fire making methods. One of the biggest advantages to these methods or any friction fire method is you don’t have to have any implements on you to produce fire. You can get what you need from nature. For bow and drill firemaking you will require a piece of cordage for a bow string, however, even this can be acquired in the wild. A piece of leather or buckskin is your best choice. A bow string can be made by shredding a piece of cloth and twisting it together or natural cordage may be twisted from strong plant fibers, small strips of animal hide or inner fibers of small branches of some trees.
Speaking of cordage. Cordage making is a very important survival skill. Following is a list of a few of my favorite cordage materials but don’t get hung up on positively identifying a plant you wish to use for cordage or limit yourselves to only these plants. Just break a plant off and see if it contains some usable fibers that you can twist without them breaking easily. Yucca (Yucca elata engelm) leaves may be scraped and yield some strong fibers. Kudzu (Pueraria montana) vines may be stripped down to usable fibers. Milkweed (Asclepias syrica) and Dogbane (Cannabis apocnyum) stalks may be broken down by crushing them, removing the hard inner pith and rubbing them between your hands until they yield some usable fibers. Dogbane, also known as Indian Hemp is one of my favorites and is one of the strongest plant fibers to use. All that being said my favorite choice for a bow string for a bow and drill set is a strip of buckskin. Cordage will be useful later, though, for traps, snares, fishing and basket making.  The value of a piece of string cannot be underestimated in a survival situation.
To make two-ply cordage, lay one bundle of fibers beside another, pinching one end. Twist one bundle away from you and then cross it over the other bundle toward you and pinch it at this juncture. Continue doing so until you achieve the length needed (see drawing). You could also braid three strands together if you know how to do so.
Making fire with bow and drill is well worth mastering. Be looking for more details on these firemaking methods in future volumes. There is no replacement for being taught hands-on though. Once bow drill fire making is mastered you may wish to learn the hand drill method which requires no bow string. Other friction methods include the fire plow and fire saw.

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING ABOUT WARRIOR SCOUT?
"Imagine for a moment if you will. You are driving down the back roads in an isolated part of the country and your car breaks down. You have no phone reception and there is no one around for miles. All of a sudden you realize that you need to stay over night. Over night turns into days of isolation. You decide to leave the safety of your car to look for help, because you have run out of food and water. All of a sudden a car pulls up beside you. They seem shady but in your desperation you respond. This strange man asks you if you need help. Reluctantly you agree, and you get into his car. You drive for miles into more isolated territory. All of a sudden you find yourself in a situation fighting for your life because the good samaritan was a wolf in sheep's clothing. You barely break free from the grips of the madman attacker rushing off into the woods to try and find safety. The madman rushing after you. If only you had a clue as to what to do. Sound like a movie? Sound unrealistic? It is not. What would you do in a situation like this?
"Being a Self Defense instructor this kind of scenario is something I think about. It is very important to be prepared for all kinds of situations. It is my belief that self defense is having the ability to survive in all situations. That means an endless learning curve. A lifetime of self-mastery and self-discovery.
" What you are about to read is a great starting point on that journey of self mastery. It is of the utmost importance that you gather skills and knowledge that could save the life of your loved ones, the life of a helpless victim and of course yourself.
" As a protector in society I have always vowed to help the ones weaker than I. Throughout the years I have sought out associations and made friends and became brothers with some of the greatest men and warriors of our day. Those associations and friendships and brotherhoods reinforce the principles that I live by. As they say birds of the same feather flock together. Nothing is as a shining example of this then my brotherly bound with my dear friend and mentor Fernan Vargas. He is a man of great character and a true modern warrior. His warrior principles and teachings are beyond compare and should be studied and applied. I have no doubt that you will find the skills in this book very helpful on your life journey.
"Benjamin Raven is a man of who was born in the wrong century. He feels most at home when in the wilderness. He is a good friend of mine and I stand behind his vast knowledge of survival skills. He is one of the best in the world and should be attentively studied. He is a modern day scout and that is a title that should be revered.
" The things in this book could save your life. Ultimately it is up to you to practice and apply it. That is what separates the warrior from the day dreamer. A warrior will take action on the information, absorb what is useful to him and his ever evolving state of authenticity. "

“Pressley and Vargas have provided an excellent tool for getting back to our basics, for re-discovering the complexity and totality of survival. In Volume One of the Warrior Scout series, they address all the basic skills that everyone should know -- water, food, navigation, etc. But they do so in the context of the awareness that civilizations rise and fall. Why did they fall, and what can we do about it today? These authors have provided the tools for a larger understanding, that you  must have a purpose, and you must have a belief in a higher power, if you are to break out of mere mundanity. In Volume 1, they provide many keys for re-embracing our tribal roots, including protecting our own tribes, as everyone automatically did at one time.  Basics of fighting and defense skills are presented -- such as the Lucky Seven,--  and how to use your walking stick as the tool it is.
Pressley is one of the old-timers in this field, and is highly respected for his experience, and his original thinking on key elements of survival training.   Volume 1 of Warrior Scout is strongly recommended for your tribe's training.”
