Hello World!

Welcome to the four-times-yearly indication that Sean is still alive!  You're welcome.  I know you were worried.  Regardless, this fall I've been collaborating in a couple new works! First, Heaviness/Lightness with choreographer Darcy Lyons is a duet between famed percussionist Dr. Andy Thierauf and myself.  We'll have showings in November at Mascher Space and in December at The Iron Factory.  Details can be found at the end of the newsletter!  I've also recently performed at Temple University's Tyler School of Art for Vervet Dance.  I was involved in Pulsing, a structured improvisation with a group of six other dancers and musicians!
Anne-Marie Mulgrew & Dancers Company is just starting rehearsals for its 32nd Season!  This summer we were able to perform a couple times: at the Come Together Dance Festival (pictured) and at the Ryerss Mansion for Performances in Public Spaces, where our performance was built as a tour around their private collection of turn-of-the-century artifacts... and a pet cemetery.
I also performed in Come Together with dancer Jennifer Yackel for University of Iowa alumna Dana Powers-Klooster's "For Now." (Reviewed here!Master Powers-Klooster is also including me in a new trio she's developing alongside Marie Brown and herself... Stay tuned for more information on that one!
My usually fluid, always entrancing movement became a still life in September for Opera Philadelphia's O17 Festival gala.  New Paradise Laboratories brought movement (okay, non-movement) artists to be stationed throughout the halls of the Academy of Music in celebration of the umpteen billion operas being debuted this season.  I was a "clown." (!?)
The Naked Stark went to Chicago last weekend!  We were invited by Salty Lark Dance, and performed Power Suite in a double bill at Links Hall.  Our weekly movement practices at Mascher have seen a great turn-out this season, and we'll soon be in rehearsal for spring performances: Visible Structures and Goodnight War Workshop.

Andy and I have been hard at work doin' our thing as stb x at!  We recently improvised for the second time at Andrea Clearfield's Salon alongside a number of talented musicians.  Pictured above is our performance with his trademark pots-and-cans set-up and my usual dress-of-the-day.

This year, our annual show was performed at Kutztown UniversityKnees + Notes featured Excuse me, trio., Blanc & Bonk, and a "sampler" including many of our 2017 works: 180", Seven Minutes, Flotsam and Jetsam, Big Desert, and more!

A bit of a special announcement: stb x at is releasing our first "CD"-ish thing!  Check out our Bandcamp to listen to 5YEARS: a DANCE/PERC live album5YEARS is a compilation of "live recordings" from our collaborations.  As the album's name suggests, we have officially been presenting work together for half a decade!  Don't get too excited about the quality: this album's audio is ripped from the amateur archival videography from our performances over the years.

stb x at is touring our current piece we're all dancing on a cliff together to New York this December!  In September we performed in Boston, and dance critic Kathryn Boland wrote us a nice review on Dance Informa!

The final piece, “we’re all dancing on a cliff together,” experimented with sound and bodies in space. It was a duet danced by Sean Thomas Boyt and Dr. Andy Thierauf of stb x at. One dancer moved Gumby-like, seemingly with no bones. His movement was momentum-driven, a turn evolving from an inwards curve or shift of a hip. The other mover provided dynamic, intriguing percussion. He used every imaginable surface, from the floors to the walls to his own body. They moved all around the space, and together created stop-and-go dynamics. Just like a fun piece of music, there were all sorts of rhythmic dynamics to enjoy.

Next up.
